"Yuyan!" Her eyes lit up in glee, and soon, in the arms of a 24 year old Takaki Yuya was a 20 year-old Takasugi Riko. "Ri-chan, what is it now?"
The younger girl sticks her tongue out childishly before pulling Takaki by the wrist. "Ri-chan! Where are you bringing me?"
"Not telling! Just follow!"
***
Looking over her shoulder, Aiko spotted Chinen jogging towards her. "Ai, what did you call me out for?" Her shoulder length softly fluttered in the gentle wind and Aiko smiled. “To meet someone.”
With that, Aiko began to lead Chinen to a place.
***
“And this is?” Takaki had folded his arms at the table. Sitting right across him and beside Riko was a tall and lanky guy. His teeth were crooked, and an awkward smile was on his thin lips.
“Yuyan, this is Nakajima Yuto. Yuto-kun, this is Takaki Yuya, also known as Yuyan. Both of you know each other for so long!”
Yuto had extended his hand out, but only retracted it when he saw Takaki glaring at him. A smack immediately landed on Takaki’s head and what he saw was a fuming Riko. “Be nice Yuyan. Yuto-kun is my friend.”
“Why should I?”
Another smack was delivered on his head.

“Yama-chan!” Soon, Aiko attacked the said boy in a big hug. For some reason, Chinen felt a pull in his heart.
The boy was taller than him, just a little. He had his hair bleached, and in his facial features were some femininity.
What was his most distinct point?
His chubby cheeks of course. “Chii, this is Yamada Ryosuke. Yama-chan, this is Chinen Yuri.”
“Why are you letting us meet?”
“I wonder.”

The bell of the café door rang, signaling a new customer. Takaki spotted that the taller boy across him stiffened a little. “Yuto-kun …” In Riko’s voice, Takaki heard that little hint of sadness. Turning around, Takaki saw three people entering.
What caught his eyes was that one boy at the door was also frozen on his spot, his gaze landed directly at their table.
“Riko-chan! It has been a long time!” The girl at the door exclaimed, and Takaki saw Riko’s expression changing quickly. “Aiko!” Soon both girls were on the floor, since Riko decided to jump onto the shorter girl.
“YUYAN! THIS IS SUGIHARA AIKO!” Takaki and Yuto had soon joined the four people, and he just hit Riko on her head. “Shhh, idiot! We’re in PUBLIC.” Riko just pouted and went over to say her greetings to Ryosuke.
“It’s been so long! Why did you have to move?” The girl hugged Ryosuke tightly and the older boy hugged back. Both of them were childhood friends, and were practically sticking to each other. However, Ryosuke had moved away when he was 10 years old.
“Yama-chan …”
The older boy let go of Riko and now had his gaze fixated on only one person. Nakajima Yuto. “Yuto-kun …”
“Both of you, sit down and talk.” All heads turned to look at Riko who was having a bitter smile. “Both of them should ne?” Aiko who was beside Riko had the same expression.
“Settle what you’ve not finished all these years. Yuyan let’s go.”
With that Riko and Takaki left the café, and Aiko and Chinen left shortly after them.
Looking at each other, Ryosuke and Yuto went to a table and sat down. No one dared to utter a word. How can they start again when they’ve never really ended?
***
Both of them arrived at the park and once Riko sat on the bench, tears started to flow. “Ri-chan?”
“Yuyan … It hurts.” The older boy pulled her into his embrace. What can he do? Sure they’ve knew each other since forever. In fact, he was childhood friends with Ryosuke too. His heart clenched. “You like Nakajima right?”
A small nod was felt against his chest.
He shouldn’t be surprised. After all, Takaki knew it from the start.
***
The name Nakajima Yuto came into his life when he was 14. The same year, Ryosuke moved and this was the name he would always say during their phone calls. Somehow, Riko had gone to visit Ryosuke, and it was then Takaki was flooded in with more of this Yuto.
Someone that he didn’t know just entered his life like this.
He didn’t have to be smart to know that Riko was head over heels for Yuto. He also didn’t have to be smart to know that Ryosuke and Yuto had mutual feelings for each other.
Who would accompany someone for a two hours trip back to their hometown every holiday? Apparently, almost every holiday, Yuto would always accompany Ryosuke back to visit Riko and Takaki.
It was confirmed when he heard how Ryosuke started to ramble about Yuto on the phone.
When both of them were 14, they got together. The change in Riko’s mood was obvious, yet she said nothing. Takaki knew from then.
After all, he wasn’t blind. Adding to that, Takaki had always been looking at Riko. It has already been years since he fell for the younger girl.
When Yuto and Ryosuke were 16, everything changed. The work load was more, they spent lesser time with each other, and soon, the relationship seems to have crumbled.
***
“I can’t do anything. They belong together since back then.” His grip on Riko’s waist tightened an attempt to comfort the crying girl.
***
“Yama-chan, I’m sorry.”
“What is there to be sorry for?”
“I …” “Stop it. It was my fault.”
How long have they been sitting there? Ryosuke felt his heart thumping against his chest. How long has it been since he last saw Yuto? Even after all these years, the taller boy never fails to catch him breathless.
‘I still love you Yuto-kun.’ Was what Ryosuke wanted to say. But how can he do that when he knew that his best friend loved his boyfriend?
***
“I like Yuto-kun, Yama-chan.” Riko covered her face as she muttered out. That had caught Ryosuke off guard, and a pang of guilt overcame him. “Don’t worry Yama-chan. I’d get over him, so be happy with Yuto-kun!”
That night after dinner, Takaki had called him to ask why Riko was crying. ‘I can’t love Yuto. I’m hurting Ri-chan.’
***
“I’m wrong Yuyan. I’ve broke them apart. I don’t want that.”
“Ri-chan …”
“It hurts me to see both of them bring hurt. Yuyan, I want to get them back together. I’m so selfish. I shouldn’t be alive.” A slap was delivered across her face, and looking up Riko could only see rage in Takaki’s gaze.
It wasn’t long before Takaki started to caress Riko’s sore cheeks, muttering soft apologies. “You have to be alive. If you weren’t alive, I would probably never know what love is.”
Tears had stopped flowing down her cheeks and soon enough, her lips were captured by Takaki’s in a soft kiss. “Yuyan,”
“It doesn’t matter what you did, who you love, or who you are. I love you Riko.” A blush decorated across Riko’s cheeks, before she laced her hands with Takaki’s. “Maybe for Yuto-kun, it has been infatuation.”
Riko had never understood why she felt her heart beating so quickly when she was with Takaki. Or why she felt like killing her neighbor for being so close to him.
But now she knew. Subconsciously, she had always been in love with her Yuyan.
***
“So that Yama-chan was the person who you were in love with?” Aiko nodded a little as she crouched down under a tree. The older boy looked up into the sky as the birds chirped merrily. “Why him?”
“He was the first one that made me see that there are guys that are different.” “And just because of that makes you think you love him? Is that truly love?”
“Then Chii, what is love?”
“Do you feel your heart beat when you see Yamada?”
“No.”
“Do you feel your cheeks flush when you’re with him?”
“Nope.”
“What about butterflies in your stomach when he whispers into your ears?”
“Not at all.”
“Then that’s not love.”
“So if I feel all these things for a person, it means that I love that person. Is that what you mean Chii?”
“Yeap.”
Standing up, Aiko went over to Chinen and hugged him. Burying her face at the crook of his neck, Aiko whispered, “Then I’m in love with you since I feel all these things when I’m with you.”
His hands went up to her waist, returning the hug. “And I’ll tell you. I love you too Aiko.”
***
“Yama-chan, are you happy?”
“I’m alright.”
“I’m asking if you’re happy.” “Probably not.”
“Why?”
There was no reply from the shorter boy. “Why?” Yuto had emphasized the question again. He wanted to know the answer, the true answer of Ryosuke. “Can I just say that because you’re not by my side?”
“Wh-?” Before Yuto even finished the sentence, Ryosuke had cut in. “I love you Yuto. But I love Riko too. She likes you. We, being together had hurt her. I don’t want to see her hurt.”
“And because of that you went away from me?” Before Ryosuke can retort back, Yuto took out his phone and flashed a text message.
‘Yuto-kun, I’m sorry. It’s my fault you and Yama-chan are like this now. I like you, I like Yama-chan too. But seeing both of you being happy makes me even happier. Seeing both of you get hurt was the worst. Get back with Yama-chan alright? He loves you, and I know you love him too.
Don’t worry about me, I have my prince charming out there.
Meet me at the café we always went to with Yama-chan. I’m making an opportunity for both of you with Aiko, my high school classmate.
From Riko.’
“Ri-chan …”
“I love you Ryosuke, so can we get back together?” A smile broke out on Ryosuke’s face as he laughed slightly. “Why get back together when both of us had never broken off in the first place?”
Moving over to Yuto’s side, Ryosuke soon had strong arms around his waist, those arms that he missed so much.
And so, all ends well.
