“Man, I’m fucking beat!” Kiba exclaimed, flopping down to sprawl out in the middle of the training ground. Akamaru curled up next to him, whimpering softly in agreement.

“But, Kiba,” Hinata protested, fingers pushing together in a nervous fidget, “we really haven’t been here that long, and there were some other moves we agreed to work on as a team today.”

“But Hinata, I’m exhausted!” he complained loudly. “All we’ve done for two weeks is train our asses off every day. I’m telling ya, its not healthy for a man to do nothing but train all the time. I need some recreation or something! I need to cause some trouble, or make some mischief…” Kiba’s eyes lit up, and he jumped up to his feet. “I know! I’ll go find Naruto, he’s always up for a little excitement.”

“N-n-n-naruto?” Hinata squeaked, blushing fiercely at her long-time crush’s name. “Oh, um, well, if you’re really sure you don’t want to train any more today, I mean, I was really looking forward to working on our new formation, but I guess it could wait, I mean if you -”

“Hinata.” Shino’s low monotone cut her off in mid-sentence. Both she and Kiba started, a bit surprised to hear him speak. Sometimes he was so quiet even they forgot he was there.

“Let Kiba go. There’s no point in training if his heart’s not into it. It would be a waste of our time and his. I’m sure Kiba would be happy to commit to practicing our new formation later this week. Right, Kiba?” Shino posed this last as a casual question, but Kiba heard the underlying threat - agree or else. He winced inwardly; he knew how important this training was to Hinata, especially since Neji had made Jounin. She wanted to prove that she, too, was strong, and Kiba understood that. But he could only take so much endless work, even if it was for Hinata.

“Sure, Shino, Hinata, absolutely. Just let me work this out of my system, and we’ll focus on the new formation later this week, after I take a break. Maybe you guys should get some rest, too, it would probably help our training if we all relaxed for a bit.” Hinata visibly brightened, most likely at the idea of even better training later in the week.

“Okay, Kiba, if you think it will help. Um…t-tell Naruto I said hi?” she asked hopefully, staring at her feet in an attempt to hid the flush spreading across her cheeks. Kiba chuckled to himself a little before agreeing to deliver the message.

“Catch you guys later!” he called over his shoulder as he ran towards the village, Akamaru right at his heels.

“He has quite a bit of energy for someone who was so exhausted not five minutes ago,” Shino observed.

“Yeah, I guess,” Hinata answered, pushing her fingers together again. “Well, I guess I’ll go home, now, since Kiba left.”

“I wouldn’t mind continuing our training, Hinata. I can help you focus on increasing your strength, and save the team training for when Kiba’s ready.”

“Really, Shino? You’d do that for me?” she asked, slightly shocked. Shino made a small, almost imperceptible movement under his many layers that might have been a shrug.

“That’s what teammates are for. Our team can only be strong when all of us are strong. The stronger you and I get now, the better for our team.” Hinata’s face broke out into a rare, beaming smile.

They trained together for another three hours, before it was Hinata’s turn to flop down in the middle of the training ground. “Now I’m the one who’s exhausted,” she sighed, wiping a layer of sweat from her forehead. Shino smirked to himself behind his wide collar. Hinata acted so differently around him than she did anyone else, Kiba included. As far as he could tell, he was the only one she ever relaxed completely in front of. Maybe she didn’t feel she had to prove herself in front of the “bug freak”, or maybe Shino’s unusually quiet demeanor let her forget he was there; whatever the reason, he was glad for it. It meant he got to see a side of Hinata that no one else knew existed.

“Do we have any water left?” Hinata asked, breaking into his thoughts. He looked down at her, then across the training field to where their bags of gear sat.

“We should, since Kiba isn’t here to drink it all. I’ll go find it.” He started towards the tree their bags sat under before Hinata could offer to get it herself. Halfway there he felt the back of his neck start to itch, and knew that Hinata was watching him walk away. He found that he didn’t particularly care for it - it disquieted him, and gave him an odd feeling in his stomach, which in turn made his insects twitchy. He could feel them buzzing around inside of him, trying to discern the cause of his unease. He fetched the bags quickly, Kiba’s forgotten bag included, and noted he and Hinata each had two bottles of water left. Kiba had apparently drank all of his before leaving earlier on top of forgetting his bag, and Shino made a mental note to return it to him tomorrow.

He turned and retreated back to the center of the clearing, more at peace now that Hinata appeared to be staring at the sky. As he approached, he realized her eyes were closed, and wondered if she had fallen asleep.

“Hinata?” he asked, and was relieved when her eyes opened immediately. He wasn’t sure what he would have done if she had been asleep - he couldn’t very well leave her there alone and unaware, but he didn’t think he’d have been comfortable trying to wake her up, either. “Here,” he said, offering her a water bottle from her pack.

“Thanks, Shino.” She sat up and took the bottle, her fingers brushing his in the process. That one small touch sent tingles through Shino’s hand, causing his insects to start buzzing around again. He withdrew quickly, thankful Hinata hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary, and watched as she opened the bottle and downed half of it in one try. Shino raised an eyebrow at this - even in a fight, Hinata was very much a lady. Seeing her gulp water like Kiba might have was a bit disconcerting.

“Sit down.”

“I’m sorry?” He was sure he couldn’t have heard her right. She looked up at him, face expectant.

“I said sit down. I’m going to have a sore neck if I have to keep looking up to talk to you.” Shino carefully settled down on to the ground, watching Hinata sip slowly at her water.

“Do you want some?” she asked, offering the bottle.

“I have my own, but thank you.” They sat in silence for awhile, Hinata sipping her water, Shino listening to his insects. They were still being vaguely twitchy, and he hadn’t the slightest idea why. He wondered if it was the non-insect related fluttering in his stomach; he didn’t know what that was about either, and he hoped he wasn’t coming down with something.

“What kind of trouble do you think Kiba and Naruto found?” he asked Hinata, smiling to himself a little as he watched the blush creep up her face.

“I, um, I d-d-don’t know, I h-hope its nothing too terrible,” she stammered, rubbing her empty hand through the grass nervously. Shino watched her squirm in embarrassment, and felt an odd warmth seep up from his stomach into his chest. He really, really hoped this wasn’t the start of a fever - that could do all sorts of unpleasant things to his insects, and he absolutely hated being sick. It made him feel useless.

“Shino?”

“Yes, Hinata.”

“What do you think of Naruto?” Shino looked at her, taken aback at the direction the conversation had taken. Why did his opinion of Naruto matter to her? Did she really expect him to answer that? The look on her face said she did, so he thought for a minute, considering everything he knew about the loud, obnoxious ninja.

“Naruto is loud, headstrong, and reckless. He doesn’t think before he acts, and his fights are mostly gut instinct, no planning. He’s rash, impulsive, and boisterous, and quite a pain to work with, as he won’t acknowledge anyone’s authority over him, even the mission leader’s.” Shino knew this from personal experience, having been said leader on a few missions with the annoying blond.

“Oh,” Hinata said quietly, face crestfallen.

“He’s also dedicated, hardworking, and fiercely loyal. Once he gives his friendship to someone, it's for life. He would never betray a comrade, and will do anything in his power to help someone in need, even a complete stranger. He has a big heart and the capability to love and care about a lot of people, which will come in handy when he becomes Hokage.”

“Hokage?” Hinata asked. Shino noted her expression was much lighter now. “Do you really think he can do it?”

“Don’t you?” Shino countered, feeling the fluttery-stomach feeling return at Hinata’s pink face. He was going to have to go home soon and figure out what was wrong with him.

“Of course I do!” she squeaked, staring down at her hands folded in her lap. “I just didn’t think you did.” Once again, Shino wondered why his opinion of Naruto mattered so much to Hinata.

“Hinata, is there something you want to talk about? About Naruto?”

“I, um, well, I, you see, I don’t think, well….” she trailed off, staring furiously at her now-clenched hands.

“You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. It’s up to you.” He watched her struggle with herself, trying to get the words out past her stutter, and realized that the entire afternoon, the only time she’d stuttered like this was when speaking of Naruto. Her speech had been fluent and easy on all other topics, and Shino wondered if she really was that comfortable with him.

“I, well, I just…” she trailed off again. Shino watched her inhale deeply, centering herself and fighting her natural shyness. “Sometimes I feel like he really doesn’t notice me,” she whispered. “I’m s-so quiet, and shy, and boring, and weak, and-”

“Hinata,” Shino said sharply. Hinata’s face shot up, eyes filled with awe and fear. Seeing fear - of him - in his teammate’s face made him feel as if his heart had just been stabbed with a kunai. “Hinata,” he tried again, a bit more calmly. “There is nothing wrong with being quiet. You are not a shy as you used to be. I find you to be far from boring. And You. Are. Not. Weak. Do you understand what I am saying?” Hinata gaped at him, apparently unable to make sound come out of her mouth. Shino waited for her to calm down enough to respond.

“Y-y-you r-really don’t think I-I’m boring?” she finally asked.

This time both of Shino’s eyebrows shot up. Everything he’d just said, and that was what she latched on to? Of course he didn’t think she was boring, this was Hinata! She was funny, and warm, and caring - at least, when Naruto wasn’t around to make her blush and stammer and faint. Shino found himself annoyed at the thought. Hinata could be so much more if she wasn’t so damned worried about what Naruto thought of her! Why didn’t she understand that? How could he make her understand that? Why did he even care?

Because Hinata, and Hinata’s happiness, were important to him. Not just as a teammate, but as a friend, and as…

Suddenly the warmth that had started in his stomach swept his whole body, sending his insects into a frenzy, and he finally realized why. He wasn’t sick, and he wasn’t running a fever. This was what attraction felt like.

He was attracted to Hinata.

He was attracted to Hinata, and she wanted Naruto, and Naruto was just so damn oblivious that he had completely missed what was right in front of him. This kind, beautiful girl would have given her left arm to have Naruto look at her, and he was too blind to see it.

Shino’s earlier annoyance had festered into anger at the thought. How dare Naruto hurt her, and ignore her, and make her feel like this because he was too stupid to open his eyes!

He stood up abruptly and stalked off towards the opposite end of the clearing. He was furious at the moment, and he didn’t want Hinata to pick up on it and think it was directed at her. He stopped what he deemed to be a safe distance away, trying to control his breathing and calm both himself and his insects. He was surprised to see that the sky had darkened to dusk; he and Hinata had been sitting out here quite awhile, and he hadn’t even noticed.

A noise behind him alerted him to Hinata’s timid presence, and he cursed himself that he hadn’t realized she had followed him.

“D-did I s-say something to upset y-y-you, Shino? If I did I-I’m r-r-really very s-sorry, I didn’t m-mean to make you angry.” He could hear the despair in her voice, and cursed himself again for putting it there, along with the stutter.

He’d upset her and made her stammer. He wasn’t any better than Naruto, really.

“Hinata,” he began, choosing his words carefully. “I’m not angry with you. I’m angry with certain circumstances, and my inability to change them. I apologize if I startled you.”

“Oh, um, o-okay, if you’re s-sure I didn’t do a-anything…”

“Of course not, Hinata,” he began, turning to face her. He didn’t finish his sentence, though, because Hinata was standing a lot closer than he had thought - so close, in fact, that he was practically nose-to-nose with her. He found himself mentally grasping for the first half of the sentence, but for the life of him couldn’t remember what he had been saying.

Her pale, pale eyes were watery, and the skin surrounding them was slightly puffy - she appeared to have been crying, which lodged the imaginary kunai firmly in his heart again. Unthinkingly, he slowly raised one hand, and ever so gently brushed a stray tear off her cheek. Her eyes widened in surprise, but she didn’t run away, or hit him, which Shino took as a good sign.

“S-Shino?”

He stared down at her for a moment, wondering what to do next. It didn’t seem fair that he wanted this girl, when she wanted someone else who didn’t want her back.

“Hinata.”

“Yes?”

“You asked me, before, what I thought of Naruto.” Hinata looked confused at this change of topic, but nodded her agreement.

“I forgot one thing. I believe Naruto to be a fool, perhaps the biggest fool in all of Konoha,” he stated simply.

“But…why?” she asked, shocked. Shino was relieved to see her curiosity at his statement had wiped the fearful look off her face.

“Because,” he started, pausing to arrange his thoughts appropriately. Was he really going to say this? Was he seriously going to tell her how he felt, when he had just realized it himself? He looked into her waiting eyes, and couldn’t bring himself to not tell her. At least this way, she’d know that someone cared, even if it wasn’t Naruto.

“Because he could right now be dating the most extraordinary girl in all of Konoha, but he’s too wrapped up in saving Sasuke and becoming Hokage to realize it. He’s letting an amazing thing pass him by.” He watched, and waited, and thanked anyone or anything listening that she couldn’t see his eyes through his sunglasses.

Hinata turned her head, a thoughtful look on her face. He could see her mind working, playing out the last few minutes again to try and make sense of them. He was actually curious to see if she’d faint when she figured out what he was talking about, and readied himself to catch her, just in case.

She didn’t faint. She turned her eyes back to meet his - or would have, if his sunglasses hadn’t been in the way. A small smile graced her lips, and Shino couldn’t help thinking that she really was very pretty.

“What are you trying to say, Shino?” she asked softly. He couldn’t help but notice her stammer was gone, and that she was looking rather comfortable in her body again.

“I’m saying that you are too good for Naruto, because he doesn’t appreciate you. And that, if you ever decide to give up on him, I would be more than happy to appreciate you.” Swiftly, before he could change his mind, he leaned in and briefly pressed his lips to hers, surprised at how soft they were. He straightened and spoke before turning to go. “Good night, Hinata.” He hadn’t made it more than three feet when Hinata started to speak.

“Shino, wait.” He stopped, but didn’t turn around. He couldn’t bring himself to watch her face when she chewed him out for what he’d just done, but he supposed he deserved to listen.

“Would…would you please do that again?” Her voice was gentle and quiet, but also…hopeful? That was impossible. He was having auditory hallucinations. Maybe he really was getting sick - that would explain so much about this evening, especially the fact that Hinata was asking him to kiss her - again.

“I’m sorry, Hinata. I think I misheard you.” He had to have heard wrong, because he couldn’t fathom a world where she wanted anyone but Naruto.

A soft rustle of grass gave him warning before he felt her hand land tentatively on his arm. He could almost hear her shake her head.

“No, Shino, you didn’t mishear me. That was….nice, and I would like to try it again. If you don’t mind,” she added. He did turn towards her now, because he didn’t think he’d ever believe she was saying this if he didn’t see her face. He searched carefully, looking for any trace of hesitation or awkwardness, but saw none. It was just Hinata: strong, gentle, beautiful Hinata, burning with quiet determination. She tugged on his arm, pulling him closer to her, until once again Shino found himself practically nose-to-nose with her again. “Shino?” She made it a question.

“Why?” he finally asked. “I thought…you wanted Naruto.”

“Naruto will always be very important to me. A big part of who I am today is because of him. But there are other people who have helped make me who I am, too. Kurenai-sensei, Neji, Kiba, you. It’s not fair, to myself or anyone else, to continue to pine over someone who usually doesn’t even notice I’m there. I’ve always known Naruto doesn’t see me as more than a nice friend. What I didn’t know was that you did see me as…all those wonderful things you said about me.”

“That still doesn’t explain why-” the words caught in his throat, but he forced himself to go on - “why you want me to kiss you.”

Hinata sighed and stared up at the sky, as if expecting the perfect words to fall from the stars. Shino waited patiently - it was one of the things he did best - until she looked at him again.

“We’re shinobi. Every day of our life is spent facing harsh realities, and my reality is that Naruto is never going to feel about me the way I do about him. Honestly, I was becoming a bit tired of it even before now." Her lips quirked, as if trying to hide a smile. "Chasing dreams is fine, but only if you can make them real. I can’t make this one real, and it’s time I came to terms with that.“ Shino was in shock. Did all of that really come out of Hinata’s mouth? Was she really telling him she was giving up on Naruto…

A brilliant, slightly mischievous smile broke out on her face, setting off another insect frenzy inside Shino. He hadn‘t known she even had a look like that. “Besides, I wouldn’t want to let an amazing thing pass me by because I was too wrapped up in Naruto to see it.” Not only was she giving up on Naruto, but she was doing it for him. And using his own words against him, as well. Shino stared, for once in his life unable to speak, and was inordinately grateful his normal attire made his body and face so hard to read.

He was even more grateful a second later, for it helped hide the flush he felt spread across his cheeks when Hinata quickly closed the small gap between them and, going up on tiptoe, pressed her lips to his, still holding on to his arm. He only hesitated for a moment, before resting his hands on her hips and kissing her back.

Hinata broke first, pulling back to catch her breath, and rested her forehead against his chest, which Shino found unusually pleasant. It had been a long time since he'd been this physically close to anyone, and he was sure it had never made him feel like this.

“Shino?” Hinata’s muffled voice vibrated through his chest, sending an involuntary shiver down his spine.

“Yes, Hinata.”

She lifted her head to look at him. “Are you sure about this? I don’t want you to feel like you have to go along with this if you don’t want to. If you want to leave, I‘ll understand.” Shino could hear the beginnings of worry and self-doubt in her voice, see the uncertainty all over her face, as if she thought Shino would walk away from her and confirm her worst fears about herself. As if Shino had that option.

“Hinata, I’m sure. I do not want to leave, and I can’t think of anyplace I’d rather be than where I am right now.” He leaned down and kissed her again, as soft as before, but this time it was filled with…something. Shino wasn’t sure what to call it. Passion? Emotion? Feeling? Whatever it was, it made his lips tingle and his heart pound, and he was fairly certain Hinata was experiencing the same thing.

Soft hands brushed his face as Hinata pushed back the hood of his overcoat before burying her hands in his hair. Strong arms circled Hinata’s waist, holding her tighter, since it was impossible for her to get any closer. Shino carefully ran one hand up the center of her back, pleased when a small moan escaped Hinata’s lips between kisses. Hinata’s gentle hands moved out towards his shoulders, pushing away his overcoat as she went, letting it fall to the ground in a rush of fabric.

Of course, underneath was another coat.

For the first time in his life, Shino cursed the fact that Aburames generally had to wear layers of clothing in order to be appropriate hosts for the Kikaichu; If he went without the extra layers for too long, the insects would become cold and sluggish.

He needn’t have worried, though, because Hinata didn’t stop there. Her hands made quick work of the zipper on his undercoat, pushing it off to join the first one on the ground, so that the only thing between Hinata and his bare chest was the mesh undershirt most shinobi wore.

“Shino,” Hinata whispered between kisses. “Take off your glasses. Please?” This request caught him off guard; he almost never took off his glasses outside of his house, and even then he wore them most of the time. However, a rather…devious idea formed in his head. He liked it, although he knew it was Kiba’s influence.

“I will make you a deal.”

Hinata eyed him thoughtfully. “What kind of deal?”

“I will remove my glasses if you will remove this,” he offered, tugging on her jacket sleeve. She blushed fiercely, but it was accompanied by a faint smile, and he was quite sure that this blush was rather different from her normal ones.

“Okay,” she agreed. “But you first.”

He inhaled deeply, than exhaled, before reaching up and pulling his sunglasses off, giving Hinata the second glimpse she’d ever had of Shino’s eyes. (The first had been two years prior, when his glasses had been knocked off during a particular heated round of training.) He knelt down to tuck them into a coat pocket and carefully folded and moved his coats to the side - he didn’t want his glasses to accidentally get stepped on.

“Ahem.” Shino looked up and swallowed thickly. Hinata had removed her jacket, revealing her own mesh shinobi shirt, black to his dark green, under which she wore only a small, thin tank top. Thin enough, in fact, that Shino could make out the tips of her nipples pressing through the lightweight fabric. Before he could stand back up, Hinata came to kneel next to him, reaching a hand out to stroke the side of his face. His eyes closed involuntarily, enjoying the sensation of Hinata - Hinata, of all people! - touching him.

“What was the point of taking off your glasses if you’re just going to keep your eyes closed?” she asked, amusement plain in her voice. Before he could open his eyes, or even answer her question, she leaned forward and, starting with his cheek, kissed her way down to his collarbone, one hand still pressed to the other side of his face. He leaned into it slightly, amazed at how good something like this could feel, before losing his balance and falling over.

Hinata looked down at him, shocked, before her hands flew to her mouth to try and cover up the escaping giggles. Shino rolled onto his back to glare at the stars while he waited for Hinata’s badly-suppressed laughing fit to end.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped, trying to catch her breath, “I really shouldn’t laugh, but its so unlike you…” She looked down at Shino’s scowl and collapsed into another fit of giggles. Literally collapsed, landing directly across Shino’s chest, making him tense up. His insects reacted immediately with a flurry of activity so intense it made him squirm, which in turn pulled his pants tight across…Oh God. In a flash of horror, he realized another part of him had, um…tensed, as well. Hinata laughed on, apparently oblivious to Shino’s current plight. He shifted slightly, attempting to sit up before Hinata noticed his dilemma.

Whether from embarrassment or the distraction of having Hinata laid out on top of him, he didn’t actually consider what would happen if he sat up with her sprawled over his upper body - namely, that she would wind up sprawled over his lower body.

She tumbled into his lap, and he knew by the way her body froze that she could tell he was rather happy for her to be there. Here he had gone on and on about what an amazing person she was, and now she was going to assume he had just been trying to get in her pants. Eyes clenched shut, he waited for her to jump up and leave, perhaps calling him a pervert on her way.

Her weight shifted as she moved, but instead of fleeing, Shino was sincerely stunned when she straddled him, legs pressed firmly against the outside of his thighs, and reached around to untie his hitai-ate. He assumed from the sounds she was removing her own as well; he couldn’t bring himself to open his eyes and confirm it, just in case he was imagining things and Hinata wasn’t really sitting on top of him.

He didn’t think that was the case, though, when he felt her hands on him again. Fingertips traced the portion of collarbone above the neckline of his shirt, ran down the center of his chest, slid under the hem of his shirt, pushing up until Shino was prodded into raising his arms so Hinata could slip his shirt over them. He briefly considered his insects, but decided the temperature was mild enough to allow himself to be shirtless for awhile longer. He brushed those thoughts aside as warm hands slid around his waist and up his back, pulling him in for yet another kiss. Hinata pressed herself to his chest as he ran his hands up her legs to rest them on her hips. His fingers found the small stretch of bare skin between her shirt and waistband, stroking it gently, amazed that he was here, with her, underneath a starry sky, touching her.

Shino didn’t know what he had done in his life to deserve this moment, but he knew he had to find out and keep doing it.

Hinata broke the kiss long enough to reach down and pull her own mesh shirt off, leaving just the oh-so-thin tank top she wore underneath. Shino again noticed the outline of her nipples pressing against the fabric, and wondered, maybe…

He moved his hands up her torso to rest on her ribcage, underneath her breasts. Ever so slowly, giving her plenty of time to see what he was doing and stop him if necessary, Shino ran his right thumb over her breast, gently grazing her nipple. Hinata shuddered, a small whimper escaping her lips. Encouraged by her response, Shino cupped her breasts in his hands and began stroking both of her nipples at the same time. This time there was nothing small or whimpery about the sounds coming from her mouth. While her moaning wasn’t particularly loud, it did seem to echo in the empty training ground, making Shino glad they were out of hearing distance from the rest of the village.

“Wait,” Hinata panted. Shino immediately withdrew, afraid he had overstepped some boundary. Hinata proved him wrong when she removed her tank top, leaving her upper body bare in the moonlight. He picked up where he had left off, and decided to take it one step further; keeping his eyes on Hinata’s face, he bent his head and took one nipple into his mouth.

It was soft and pliable, and he liked the way it felt against his tongue. He moved on to the other side, and gave it an experimental nibble. He was rewarded with a loud moan, and so nipped a bit harder, extracting a gasp of pleasure from Hinata. He felt her hands move to his waist and realized she was unfastening his pants.

He stopped what he was doing and looked Hinata in the eye. “Are you sure?” She blushed furiously, but nodded. He thought for a minute before tapping her leg, indicating her to move. He reached and grabbed his coat, spreading it out next to him on the grass before taking Hinata’s shoulders and gently guiding her down to lay on it. He quickly removed his shoes and leg wrappings before standing up and removing his pants as well, leaving only his black undershorts. A slight breeze sent a shiver down his spine, leaving him feeling rather vulnerable and exposed. He had spent his entire life wrapped in a cocoon of protective clothing. Yes, the main reason was his Kikaichu, but he had grown to appreciate the anonymity and privacy his usual style of dress afforded him. He usually wore more clothing than this to bed, but here he was, mostly naked in the middle of a training field. It made his skin feel itchy and uncomfortable, although that might have also been due to the incessant buzzing going on inside him.

Looking down at a very topless Hinata, he decided it was more than worth it.

He knelt down on the ground next to her, tracing the skin around her navel in lazy circles. “What do you want, Hinata? I don’t want you to feel pressured into anything, and will only go as far as you allow.”

“You,” she whispered, eyes fluttering as she arched her back into his touch. “I want you.”

Astonishing, really, the effect those three words could have on someone. Shino had not known that so much sexual tension could be generated by such a simple sentence, nor that it was possible for his erection to get any harder than it already had been. Wordlessly he lay down on his side next to her, body pressed close to hers, and kissed her while deft fingers unfastened her pants and slipped under her panties. She was hot, and moist, and Shino couldn’t believe she was letting him do this.

Hinata pressed urgently against his mouth and hand, somehow managing to moan loudly around his tongue. One finger, then two, pushed inside her, making her shudder underneath him. He moved from her mouth to her jaw line, kissing his way along her neck and down the front of her body, pausing at her waistband long enough to pull his hand from her pants. He smiled a little at the following sound of protest as he sat up. “Shhh,” he said, moving to kneel at her feet. He removed her shoes before hooking his fingers onto the sides of her pants. “Hinata,” he said softly, watching her blink her eyes open to look up at him. “Do you want me to continue?” She nodded, and Shino was relieved to see there was no hint of uncertainty or hesitation. She really did want this.

He started removing her pants, only to jump when Hinata sat up, fear on her face. “Shino, we can’t.” He quickly pulled back, not surprised she had changed her mind. He was glad it had happened, even if it went no further, and couldn’t blame her for wanting to stop.

“I understand,” he answered, and started to move when Hinata grabbed his wrist. She spoke slowly, as if embarrassed, but determined to get the words out.

“Shino, its not that I don’t want to. But I’m heir to the Hyuga clan. I can’t so blatantly risk getting pregnant. If we had protection, then yes, but not without. I just can’t.”

Ah. Shino completely understood her reasoning; she was absolutely right, and he was disappointed in himself for not considering that possibility himself. He was so wrapped up in Hinata he wasn’t thinking clearly, which, as a shinobi, was unforgivable. At least, for him it was. That sort of behavior wouldn’t have surprised him in somebody such as Kiba, but…

Kiba.

Shino glanced towards their forgotten bags sitting a few yards away. “Wait,” he told Hinata before getting up to retrieve the bags. He returned and sat next to Hinata, abandoning his and her bags in favor of going through Kiba’s.

“Um, Shino? What are you doing?” Hinata asked, obviously confused. Shino answered without looking up.

“Kiba is crude and tactless, especially when it concerns appropriate topics of conversation in restaurants. However, this time it seems to have worked to my advantage.” He found what he was looking for, but stopped before pulling it out. “Are you sure that I am really what you want? I’ll understand if you have changed your mind.”

Shino didn’t think he had ever seen Hinata actually roll her eyes before. It was odd, but almost cute, especially when paired with a slightly condescending smile that meant she thought he was being a bit ridiculous. He watched the unfamiliar expressions on her face, and for a second, saw not Hinata, but the strength of the Hyuga clan. “Yes,” she said, kissing him on the cheek. “I’m sure.” Satisfied that he wasn’t taking advantage of her, he pulled something small out of Kiba’s bag and showed it to Hinata.

She blushed slightly and giggled. “How did you know that was in Kiba’s bag?”

Shino tucked the condom into the waistband of his shorts and moved the bag aside before laying down, pulling Hinata with him. “As I said before, Kiba has no concept of what and what not to discuss in a public setting. Last week during lunch Sai made a comment that apparently offended Kiba’s sense of masculinity, subsequently pulling these out as part of his rather loud defense.”

“What did Sai say to him?”

Shino smirked. “Sai implied that Kiba was missing an essential part of the male anatomy.” Hinata looked at him, silent and wide-eyed, before bursting into giggles.

Shino laid and watched her, glad she was so relaxed and at ease lying next to him. This was Hinata as she was meant to be - happy, untouched by self-doubt and worry. This was the Hinata he would always remember, regardless of what happened between them after tonight.

He laid a kiss on her shoulder before moving to kneel between her legs again. Grasping both sides of her waistband, he eased her pants and panties over her hips and down her legs in one smooth movement. Leaning over, he circled his tongue around her navel before kissing his way down between her legs. He licked experimentally, liking the way her whole body seemed to vibrate at his touch. Sliding the tip of his tongue into her made her squirm, while moving up and licking right there made her entire body freeze up, accompanied by sharp gasps of pleasure.

Shino backed up slightly, moving one arm along the outside of her thigh to brace himself while he slid two fingers back inside of her, working them in and out a few times before lowering his head to suck gently on her clit. Her whole body trembled uncontrollably underneath him until her hips bucked and her back arched, followed by one of the most intense screams Shino had ever heard come out of a person.

He withdrew his hand and looked up at Hinata, taking in her flushed cheeks and panting breaths. Who knew she’d be so loud? He waited for her breathing to even out, taking the opportunity to watch her breasts quiver as her chest heaved. After a few minutes she calmed down a bit, body relaxed and languid.

“Shino,” she said softly, breath still slightly irregular.

“Yes, Hinata?”

“I…I want…you. Inside me…” she trailed off, unable to say any more. That was fine. Shino didn’t need her to say any more. He leaned back on his knees and pulled the condom from his waistband before starting to remove his shorts.

“Hey, Kiba, did you hear that?” yelled a very loud, rather obnoxious voice that Shino knew belonged to a very loud, rather obnoxious blond ninja.

Naruto.

He and Hinata looked at each other in shock before jumping up. Shino grabbed his coat and pants from the grass, tossing the coat to Hinata. “Put this on and get our bags. I’ll get Kiba’s bag and the clothes.” With a speed and efficiency resultant of their years of ninja training, he and Hinata slipped their partial outfits on, collected the various items spread around them and took off for the surrounding forest, not stopping until they were hidden in a thick patch of trees. Not a moment too soon, because a few seconds after they stopped a stumbling Kiba and Naruto appeared in the clearing.

Kiba stopped in the middle of the training field, hands on hips, and slowly surveyed the area. Shino barely dared to breathe, waiting for Kiba’s well trained nose to pick up the unmistakable scent of sex they had to have left behind.

“Is this where you left it?” Naruto slurred, tripping over a rock. He wound up face first in the grass while Kiba pointed and laughed. Naruto drug himself off the ground, shoving Kiba in the shoulder and glaring. “Fuck off, man. You’re the one who wanted to come find your bag. I was happy sitting around drinking.”

Drinking? Hinata mouthed to Shino, who shrugged in response. It didn’t surprise him in the least, and this was definitely to their advantage. If Kiba was drunk, there was a possibility his senses were dulled enough to not pick up their scent. And judging from the slurred words and clumsy walking, Kiba and Naruto were very drunk, indeed.

“Kiba. Come on!” Naruto groaned loudly, plopping down on the grass before cradling his head in his hands. “This takes too much longer, I’m gonna lose my buzz.”

“Hold on, loser,” Kiba shot back, stumbling over the same rock Naruto had tripped over. Hinata let out a muffled giggle, prompting Shino to slap his hand over her mouth and pull her face into his chest before their uninvited company heard.

“You have to be quiet,” he whispered in her ear, very much aware that under his coat she was still naked. “Remember your training.” Hinata pulled her head back and nodded once. Shino watched her take a deep breath and center herself - a much more enjoyable sight than usual considering the way his coat gaped open at the front.

Shino watched as Naruto lurched to his feet, yelled something unintelligible in Kiba’s general direction, and staggered back the way they’d came. Kiba let out a growl of frustration and followed, muttering to himself the whole way.

They had been gone a full ten minutes before Shino dared to speak again. “Well that was certainly unexpected.”

Hinata giggled. “I guess that’s one way of putting it.” She paused for a moment before adding, “Bad timing, too.”

Shino could only agree with her. While avoiding detection had killed his erection, the desire he felt was still a tangible thing, and having a mostly naked Hinata still pressed against his body was not helping matters.

“So…” Hinata began.

“Would you…” Shino started at the same time.

“You first,” Hinata said.

“Would you like me to walk you home? After you get dressed, of course.”

Hinata smiled and shook her head. “No, I don’t think so. At least, not right this minute.” Shino didn’t have time to respond before she was kissing him again, breasts pressed up against his chest, hands already working to unfasten his pants, and that was all it took for his erection to come back in full force. He kissed her back hard, all pretense of control stripped away, and walked her backwards the three steps it took to push her against a tree. Still kissing her, Shino pulled the condom out of his pants pocket before removing them and the shorts completely. He pulled back long enough to tear open the wrapper and slide it on, positioning himself to enter her.

The look of want and anticipation on her face, the maddening buzz of his Kikaichu, his heart pounding in his chest - still, he stopped himself and waited.

“Hinata?” He made it a question, unwilling to move forward without her explicit say-so.

“Yes, Shino,” she breathed. “Yes.”

That was all he needed to hear.

He made himself go slowly, taking every ounce of self-control he had left. While yes, he had done this once before, he didn’t know if she had, and would never forgive himself if he hurt her. He pushed in, inch by agonizing inch, until he was sheathed completely. He held for a second before moving back out, and started the process over again, going quicker this time, until he was rapidly pumping in and out of her, face buried in her neck, Hinata not trying in the slightest to control her ever-increasing moans.

“Kiba!”

Shino froze mid-stroke. Peering around the edge of the tree, he watched Kiba and Naruto come stumbling into the clearing again. Hinata was right, they’re timing could not have been any worse.

“Don’t stop,” she whispered in his ear. “Please.”

“But Kiba and Naruto have returned, and you’re…well, rather loud,” he whispered back.

“Then keep me quiet, but please don’t stop.” Shino was on the verge of saying no, that this was a very bad idea, when she rocked her hips against him, driving his erection back into her. All thoughts of stopping disappeared immediately.

He kissed her hard as he continued, hoping if she had something to do with her mouth it would help. While it definitely muffled her moans, it didn’t quiet them enough. Left with no other option, he covered her mouth with his hand as he continued to drive into her, pushing her into the tree with every thrust. Hinata writhed against the bark, and Shino realized if either Kiba or Naruto looked over at the wrong moment, they very well might see an errant hand shoot out from behind the tree.

He pulled his hand away from her mouth long enough to capture both wrists and push them above her head, holding both against the tree with one hand while he covered her mouth with the other.

Kiba and Naruto were arguing about something, but Shino couldn’t bring himself to care about what. Their voices were just background noise, barely noticeable next to the wet heat of Hinata, and the feel of her teeth sinking into his palm in an effort to keep quiet. His insects were a flurry of activity, but he ignored them, concentrating only on the moment at hand.

Soon Hinata’s body was tensing, back arching off the tree as she involuntarily strained against her makeshift bonds. She bit his hand hard enough to break skin, but Shino was past caring; his own orgasm followed soon afterwards as he thrust into her one last time and held it, his entire body shuddering.

He released Hinata’s arms, slipping his now free one between her and the tree to wrap around her waist. He stood like that for a minute, head bent forward to rest on Hinata’s shoulder.

“Is it safe to uncover your mouth?” he whispered. He felt her nod her head, and cautiously pulled his hand away. He could still hear Kiba and Naruto arguing out in the clearing, and it would only take one sound to give them away.

“I need to sit down,” Hinata said softly. “My legs are about to give out.” Shino straightened up and, grasping the base of the condom, quickly withdrew, allowing Hinata to sink down to sit at the base of the tree. He knelt down and rummaged around in his pack, pulling out an unused roll of bandaging. He used part to wrap up the condom, tucking it into a side pocket for later disposal, some for a quick clean up, which went into the same pocket, and the rest to wrap up the hand Hinata had bitten. He extracted his shorts from the bundle of hastily collected clothes and pulled them on before moving to sit in front of Hinata. Naruto and Kiba’s voices still carried through the air, making Shino wonder what exactly it was they were looking so hard for.

“Kiba, I’m telling you, its not here! Shino or Hinata probably grabbed it for you. You’ll just have to get it tomorrow.” Shino’s eyes met Hinata’s before they both looked at Kiba’s bag sitting mere feet away from them. He heard the laugh start before Hinata’s hands flew to her mouth, trying to keep quiet.

“But Naruto, I need it! I need what’s in there! Else I’m never gonna get laid,” Kiba complained loudly.

Shino got his hand over her mouth before the laugh escaped. “Quiet,” he warned. “They have to leave eventually.” Hinata nodded once, her face turning red with the effort to not make noise.

“Kiba, even with a bag of condoms, you’re not gonna get laid tonight,” Naruto pointed out. “That chick probably already left we’ve been out here so long.”

“Fine, fine! We’ll leave. I didn’t really want her, anyways,” Kiba muttered. Shino heard feet shuffling through the grass, then silence. He waited another two minutes before checking to see if they were gone. Once he had confirmed their absence, he let Hinata go.

Hinata and Shino regarded each other in silence for a moment before Hinata really did burst out laughing. “If Kiba had any idea why he couldn’t find it…” she managed before the second fit of giggles erupted.

Shino gave her a rare smile. “I believe it would involve a large amount of yelling and cursing.”

“Most likely,” she agreed. “I should go home. My father’s probably wondering where I’ve disappeared to.”

“I’ll walk with you.” In unspoken agreement, they both proceeded to sort out and put on their respective clothing. It wasn’t until Shino was fully dressed again, sunglasses firmly in place, that he realized his insects were unusually still. Concerned, he prodded them with a bit of chakra, surprised to find them not sluggish as he had feared, but lazy. Lazy and content. Apparently good sex appeased more than just his own tension.

Fully dressed and bags in hand, Shino and Hinata started back towards the center of the village.

“I’m sorry,” Shino said abruptly as they walked.

“For what?” Hinata asked, surprised.

“For having to…restrain you. I hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable.”

“Oh,” Hinata said, and blushed. Shino waited for her to continue. “Well, you see, I didn’t really mind…I kind of liked it,” she said in a rush, staring very hard away from Shino.

And he’d been worried she’d think him a pervert.

“I see.” They walked in silence for a few minutes before Hinata spoke again.

“Um, next time…is there going to be a next time?” She glanced at him, obviously worried what he thought of her confession.

“Would you like there to be a next time?”

She nodded. “Mm-hm.”

“Then it will be arranged. You had a request?”

“Next time let’s use a bed.”
