What you really should go to are:
Museums - Musee de Cluny, Musee Rodin, Musee d'Orsay (for the view from the cafe if not the impressionists)l'Orangerie for the Monet waterlilies.
Wandering free - yes Pere Lachaise - anyone who was anyone, Palce de Vosges in the Marais while you are over that way. Wander the Ile St Louis.
Notre Dame is fab - but truly mindblowing is the Sainte Chapelle - I went there for a concert.
Pick up Pariscope or the Officiel des Spectacles from a newspaper kiosk - it costs very little used to be a couple of francs and tells you everything that is on. Free concerts can be a good way to have a look in places. Also has exhibitons, films - much cheaper there and everything you could want to see.
Don't forget you'll save a fortune if you picnic a bit and get drinks etc from somewhere like Monoprix (there is one at the top of the champs elysees). But do go to the Rue Cler market too - brilliant place.
The latin quarter and down to the Cite Universitaire used to be best for cheap eats. A favourite was the Creperie des Arts but things may have changed after so much time.
