The GRB passed Royal Assent yesterday, 1st July. Here is another letter from Claire McNab:

Subject : UK: It's now the Gender Recognition ACT!

I have just received confirmation that the Gender Recogntion Bill has today received the Royal Assent, and that Parliament has been formally notified.

So that's it: the bill is now law, and we can now talk of The Gender Recognition Act 2004.

I hope you don't mind me stressing again that it will take many months for the Act to be implemented: the first applications will be considered some time early next year, probably at the start of April.

I expect that the officials in the Department for Constitutional Affairs will be circulating something in the next few days explaining some of what will happen between now and then ... but the important thing which you need to know is that there is nothing you need to do NOW to prepare for applying: see
http://www.pfc.org.uk/pfclists/news-arc/2004q2/msg00072.htm

Officials hope to have application packs available several months before the opening date, so there will be plenty of time to get all your paperwork in order.

Best wishes, Claire McNab (Vice-president, Press For Change)
