Transphobia on Radio 1

Aug 12, 2006 12:27

Hi,

I don't know how many people here listen to Radio 1 in the mornings, but recently Chris Moyles has been overstepping the line with his remarks about transgendered people. A friend and I have made complaints to the BBC and Ofcom, but have recieved no reply from them. We thought maybe they would take it a bit more seriously if a few more people would also complain.

You can download part of last week's podcast here for an example of the kind of stuff that has been said. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=48FM9H5C

Personally I find it unacceptable that a public figure should be allowed to make a mockery of a vulnerable sector of society, and think that it should be conveyed to his bosses exactly how serious his transgression is.

Thanks to anyone who does decide to make a complaint.

Programme title: Radio 1 Breakfast show with Chris Moyles

Date(s) & time(s) of broadcast: 31/07/06 7-10am

Channel / station: Radio 1

Last Friday (28/7/06) Chris Moyles made an offensive remark about transexual Nadia Almada, referring to her as a "man/woman thing". This was followed up on Monday morning by a feature about "tranny Rachel" which was basically a piss take of a male to female transexual. "tranny Rach" sang a song about hairy backs, and was mocked for her voice . It seemed that the whole purpose of this feature was to mock transexuals, without any humour involved. Indeed, no one I have spoken to who heard the segment, trans or otherwise, found it to be amusing. This disgusting attack on a vulnerable community such as that of transexuals should not have been allowed on the air. This sort of mockery of a racial minority would not be permitted, so why is it allowable to mock another minority, and one which faces a great deal of harrasment in every day life without influential figures such as Mr. Moyles exacerbating the problem by giving the impression that it is okay to take the piss out of transexuals and that they are somehow lesser beings than other people.

Hi people

Criss Moyles has been saying some horribly offensive things about transgender people on his show. The first time I heard it was on Monday the 31st July shortly before 9am. A character called “Tranny Rachel” was introduced, played by the producer Rachel whose voice had been electronically altered to sound very strange and low pitched. Over the next 25 minutes a very disgusting picture was painted of “Tranny Rachel” who even sung a song, called “Hairy Back” which included lines say that she liked to be whipped, among other things. “Tranny Rachel” was on the show for about 25 minutes and believe me what I say it was a horrible 25 minutes, there was also a song about a transvestite truck driver, though that wasn’t nearly as bad. Clips from Mondays show were repeated on Tuesday, and the “hairy back” song was played again. I didn’t listen to his show again until about a week and a bit later, and then I heard the bits of the “hairy back” song and the truck driver song again!!

I’ve also got a copy of the weekly podcast of that show and that has an interview with “Mr Tranny Rach” again it is horrible listening there are questions about whether she sunbaths naked, her sexuality, whether or not she’s had the op, and which days of the week she feels feminine / butch. She doesn’t give much in the way of answers, but still its nasty. There’s also yet another reference to body hair and a rather unplesent picture is painted of here “letting it all hang out”.
The whole thing lasts for 4 minutes, if you decide to listen to it be aware it may upset you. (clip is above)

I don’t know what was on the show on for the rest of that week, but if it’s anything like Monday, Tuesday or the podcast then frankly I think there’s been a mini hate campaign against us.

Me and at least one friend have complained to both the bbc and Ofcom, but have been completely ignored by both. That arrogant child thinks he can get away with this, and I hate to say it but unless more people complain about it he’s right. People need to make some noise; this kind of thing should not be allowed to go on especially so blatantly on national radio. This is what teenagers are listening to before they go to school, and it’s sending a message that is perfectly ok for transsexuals and transvestites to be despised, ridiculed and humiliated.

Please help by sending complains to the BBC, Ofcom and anyone else who cares. We need to make sure things like this are stopped.

Melissa
