i recently went to visit a fellow teacher during lunch. it turns out that she is reading to kill a mockingbird with a bunch of her 6th graders during lunch. i'd never read it, and asked if i could join their group.
atticus finch, who is the father of the narrator, was claimed as a role model by rafe esquith, because atticus refuses to give up simply because he is going to fail.
i'm finding more than just that, though.
atticus is a model of caring and nurturing. he allows his children a huge amount of independence, while at the same time holding them to high standards of behavior, trustworthiness, and appreciation of education. i realize that he is a fictional character, but his acts resonate with me, and i now have a new goal to hold in front of me: that perfect balance of fostering independence and excellence together.
