My first day of school

Jan 19, 2004 20:46

School started bright and early at 9:30 am (which felt like 6:30 to me!) with organic chemistry. It didn't seem so bad..but then, we didn't actually learn anything today. The prof just spent the whole time telling us that we need to stay on top of the work, that we should do all the problems, that there are clinics availiable and that he has lots (and i mean lots!) of office hours..so don't worry, if we work hard we won't fail. ugh.

That was followed by a terribly expensive trip to the school bookstore. I am now decidely poor, having spent half of what i owned...I definitely need to find a job. Anyone know any place that is still hiring? If worse comes to worse I can work for the annual giving fund, which will involve me calling alumni and asking them to donate money. Though I may also feel too much like a pestering brat to do that. I need money, so i'm begging alumni to give the school money, which will in turn give me money for begging. something just doesn't seem quite right about that.

On the good side, it has been really nice to see all my friends and catch up with them. And what has been neat lately is that I've started up a lot of conversations with people I don't know, just to talk and get to know them. Like today, I met this junior on the shuttle who had gone abroad in Wales. And we talked about Wales, and its history and it was really interesting. Did you know that Wales has been ruled by the British since 1282? And so currently only 20% of the population speaks Welsh. So there has been a big movement to try and reinstate the language, though i'm not sure how successful it has been. It made me think about other areas who are trying to recapture lost languagues, like in areas in France. Do you think that they can be successful? Have there been any examples in history where a language was revived? It also made me consider little territories that are owned by large countries but want to be free--and i have another question--why don't these other countries just let them free? (i realize thats naive..but I still wonder). Like Wales, what does the UK get out of owning it? Or the Basque country in Spain? Or what would happen to Canada if Quebec succeeded?

Well, I guess thats why i'm going to school. Just gotta keep learning! But first..I want a nap. :-)
