"Hey?"
"Hey, kid?"
"What the hell do you think your doing?"
"Can you move!"
"What are you a homeless bum, get off the stairs already!"
Ugh...
Jaejoong's eyes slowly blinked open. He saw the blurred figure of a man standing over him. A black coat that reached his thighs made him look like an ill proportioned shadow looming over the small raven haired man. Jaejoong lifted one of his hands to cover his face, the smell of dirt and rain water covered his mouth and woke him up quickly. He sputtered and kicked his feet, only to splash more dirty water around.
"Aw, come on! Calm down!" the man took a few steeps back, his shoes making scuffing sounds on the pavement. "You're sitting in a puddle!"
Jaejoong stopped moving. He sat up and looked down at the water surrounding him. The man watched as the strangers eyes became cloudy and bloodshot. His full pink lips puckered out in a heartbreaking pout. The man's breath caught in his throat. Everything in his mind was telling him to shove the boy aside so he could finally get inside his apartment, it was freezing and quickly growing dark, but his mind was racing with his mother's words and the rekindled memories all his family members were laughing at during dinner. He wouldn't leave a kitten in a cold puddle by himself so he was not going to leave this boy.
"Do you have a place to go?" the man asked, taking a step closer to the boy. Jaejoong shook his head sadly. "Okay, well... come here." The man held out his gloved hand for the boy and Jaejoong quickly took it. The man pulled him up out of the puddle, giving the boy a once over and a forced reassuring smile before leading him to the door of the apartment building.
Inside, the man's apartment was small and lonely looking, the walls were bare and the matching dark wood and leather furniture looked new and unused. It fit with his long black jacket and eyes, but it didn't fit with how nice he was being and how he smelt like a home cooked meal. Jaejoong wandered over to the brown leather couch and was about to sit down when the man pulled him back. "Wait, no. Take a shower first." He lead Jaejoong over to a hallway leading out of the living room and opened the first door. The man pulled a towel out from a small closet beside the toilet then pushed it and the boy into the bathroom and closed the door.
The man waited outside the door until he heard the water running and then went back to the living room. He took off his coat and placed the paper bag he was holding on the coffee table, not bothering to open it. He sat down on the couch and ran his hand over his face.
"Inviting a stranger into your house right after New Years dinner, Yunho?" he muttered out loud. "Mom's really rubbing off on me." His hand rested over his face, his wrist covering his eyes from the bright living room light, and his body sunk further into the couch. The late hour of the night and the excitement of the day caught up to the man and Yunho felt himself almost falling asleep until a cold gust of wind made him look up. Jaejoong was crouching beside him, looking hard at his face and puckering his lips like a child.
"What's your name?" Jaejoong smiled.
Yunho blinked at the boy before answering, "Jung Yunho." Jaejoong broke into a big smile. Yunho looked down at the other and noticed that he was only wearing a towel over his lap, leaving his snow white chest exposed, the skin blushing red from the temperature change.. "You need some clothes," Yunho said. He stood up and rushed to his bedroom. Jaejoong stood up and waited form him half naked and smiling in the middle of the living room.
Yunho came back in a minute, carrying a set of red flannel pajamas. He handed them to the boy. "My mother got these for me a year ago, they should fit you."
Jaejoong smiled and took them. Yunho watched him for some time before understanding that the boy wanted him to turn around. "Oh," he gasped, then allowed the boy some privacy. Jaejoong laughed a little, his voice high like the jungle of bells. The towel dropped and he slipped the pajamas on quickly, tapping Yunho on the shoulder when he was done.
"They are a little big," Yunho tried to hold back from touching the boy. He looked so young and cute in the slightly over sized pajama top, his prominent collar bones poking out just a little, and his disheveled black hair falling over the skin like a light powdering of cocoa dust. "But... it will do for just tonight."
"Just tonight?" Jaejoong asked, his eyes becoming wide.
"Of course," Yunho answered, "you're not staying for long."
"But, I have no where to go!" Jaejoong felt the tears come back into his eyes.
"Look... um... what's your name?"
"Jaejoong--"
"Look, Jaejoong, It's New Years, that's the only reason I picked you up. My mother would like to me have a resolution to be nicer this year, and that's why your here at all, ...but I'm not a shelter. I have a lot of important work to do and you cannot--"
"Keep me until Christmas!" Jaejoong broke in, clutching onto the front of Yunho's dress shirt. "I will leave on Christmas!" Yunho didn't look convinced, though he was turning red from the closeness. "I will pay you back. I can cook and clean for you because you are so busy!"
Yunho furrowed his eyebrows, he took Jaejoong's hands in his own and pulled them off of his shirt. "That's a whole year!" he pursed his lips and shook his head lightly, "I don't really need anyone being a house keeper for me, especially for that long--"
"Please!" Jaejoong pushed even closer to Yunho, batting his long eyelashes and making his eyes sparkle like ice in the sunlight, "I promise I will not get in the way and only make your house feel warmer!"
"Why does my house need to be warmer?"
"It's so boring right now."
"Hey!"
"Don't make me go outside in the puddle again!" Jaejoong cried as he pressed his face against Yunho's broad chest.
Yunho's breath hitched, the boy's body pressed against his was soft and welcoming, and the droplets of water on his hair were damping his shirt and making his skin sensitive to the boy's warm breath. He gulped and cursed at himself. "Okay, okay!" he tried to pull the boy off of his chest. "You can stay!"
"Thank you!" Jaejoong stood on his tip toes and pecked Yunho on the cheek, then without letting the man react he bounced away into Yunho's bedroom. "I promise to clean the whole house and make three square meals a day every day!"
Yunho sputtered as he held his cheek where the boy had kissed him, "Wa- wait!" he called as he ran after him. "You cant just be my house keeper! You have to get a job if your going to stay here!"
Jaejoong was crawling into the middle of Yunho's clean, pure white bed sheets. He turned around and smiled a breathtaking grin of ivory teeth and his black eyes seemed to twinkle silver in the low light. Yunho's breath caught as he watched him sit there looking gorgeous. "You have to get a job," he repeated, but this time in a meek whisper.
"Okay," the boy laid his head down on the pillow and shook out his raven hair, "but you have to tell me what that is."
Yunho decided against his better wishes that he would sleep on the couch. After a tired explanation of jobs and the working class that only succeeded in making Jaejoong confused, and frustrating Yunho because the boy was so adorable when he was confused, Jaejoong then nodded off in the middle of Yunho's bed. Looking at him sleeping peacefully, Yunho could plainly see that his house had successfully been invaded. He gathered the comforter that ad been kicked on the ground and a spare pillow from his room closet and fell into the couch in an exhausted heap, still dressed in his suit he had worn to dinner earlier.
He woke up that morning to Jaejoong asking him how many eggs he wanted. He gurgled back a number and rolled over to the arm of the couch so he could watch the boy busy himself in the kitchen. Jaejoong was still wearing the pajama bottoms he had given him, but was now wearing a tight white sweater that Yunho recognized as a Christmas present he had set out to return. He couldn't bring himself to be angry the boy had gotten into it, however, because the smell of the breakfast he was making his stomach growl in desperation. He got up from the couch and stumbled up to the island in the middle of his kitchen and pulled out one of the stools under it. "Jaejoong-shi," he called out to the boy. Jaejoong turned around and smiled before holding up a plate filled to the brim with food. Scrambled eggs filled up most the plate, with golden hash browns and cooked vegetables on the other side. Yunho's mouth opened and he could feel drool pooling inside it. He wisped out a small Thanks before reaching for the plate and offered civil wear and digging into it.
Jaejoong watched him with a small humored look as he sat opposite the man and ate his own food. The tension in the air was stifling for Yunho, the boy opposite him was a complete stranger, but for Jaejoong it looked like nothing but a bright and sunny morning. The wide smile lighting up his face never faltered. He watched as Yunho ate and blushed when the man gave him a small nod of appreciation. Yunho felt his blood boil and his fists tighten as the boy flushed red and looked down like a stubborn kitten. It was all so perfect, and he was so cute, and Yunho didn't know what he was supposed to do.
"I have a friend who can get you a job!" Yunho blurted out, making Jaejoong sputter in shock into a spoon full of eggs.
The boy scrubbed his face with the back of his hand then answered, "well, that's good then...," he smiled widely, "I would like to go to work!"
Yunho scoffed, "maybe not, once you meet my friend Yoochun." Jaejoong looked back at him with a questioning wide eyed glare. Yunho sighed through a bite of breakfast and continued. "Yoochun own's a dinner. He can use someone like you to cook for him, but he likes to work his employees a lot, so you might not be interested."
"What do you mean! I love to cook, I want to cook for Yoochun!" Yunho chuckled behind his teeth.
"I will give him a call then," he said. Jaejoong raced to finish breakfast and though Yunho wasn't in such a hury it was hard to try and pace himself with the delicious food. As Jaejoong offered to clean up Yunho pulled out his phone and begrudgingly dialed up his friend.
"Yoochun-ah," he muttered into the phone as greeting. The boy hopped up back on his stool and watched with anxious lips tucked between his lips. Yunho lost himself looking at the bulbous, perky lips pulled teasingly taught and almost missed what the person on the other end of the phone said to him. "Ah, yeah I'm here," he barely recovered. "I got a friend who cooks really good and I thought he would make a great addition to your restaurant." Jaejoong was on edge as Yunho nodded though Yoochun's response. "Uh, he is over at my house... you don't have to! I can bring-," he sighed loudly, wanting the other end to hear, "okay, okay. We will be here." Then Yunho hung up with a sharp stab on his phone screen.
Across the island Jaejoong inquired with large eyes what had happened. Yunho shrugged lightly and explained, "Yoochun said he wants to meet you. He is on his way over here."
Jaejoong nodded then pursed out his lips in thought. He cocked his head to the side then back again and lightly spoke up, "Do you have my clothes?" Yunho's face flushed as his mind spun the context of the question completely around. He tried to hide it by sliding from his stool and briskly striding out of the kitchen. Jaejoong was left at the island smiling to himself. He giggled softly but stiffened up when Yunho came back.
"What were you doing with these clothes anyway," Yunho piped up. Jaejoong shot him a questioning glance so Yunho continued, "I mean, these are dress slacks and your sweater was wool. How did you end up sitting in a puddle with such nice clothes on?"
Jaejoong smiled widely and explained, "my friend made me these pants and I knitted the sweater!" Choosing to leave the real question unanswered. "I'm going to go change in your room!" he announced as he skipped off. Yunho winced as the image of Jaejoong getting undressed in his room flashed in his mind and buried his face in his hands. He inhaled and exhaled at a count of 5, trying to calm his heart and the rapid blood flow to below his belt.
A knock on the door started him, all his calming breathing for naught, and he wore a snarl on his face as he got up to answer it.
"Yo Yunho," Yoochun waved his hand in greeting. He quickly slunk through the open door and Yunho's tired stare to stand in the living room. He turned around and watched as his friend locked the door again. "What's with the suit, you don't have work today?"
"Oh," Yunho touched his chest and remembered he was still wearing his clothes from last night's dinner. His starched white shirt was pulled out of his belt and his slim fitting slacks were showing the beginnings of wrinkles around his knees. He winced as he tried to remember where he put his tie but came up blank. "Well, I just, haven't had time to-," he cut himself off when he noticed Yoochun's slightly humored smirk, "It's a long story."
"I'm free," Yoochun stuffed his hands in his jeans pockets. Yunho's shoulders fell with a defeated sigh. This was what he hated about the man, how he can flash one understanding look and make Yunho think he had somewhere to run to when times got tough. He ran a hand trough his unwashed greasy hair and shook his head lightly. Yoochun shrugged, not unused to being blow off by the other, and turned to wander the room.
"So were is this chef at, hum?" he said as he leaned into spy on Yunho's kitchen.
A slug blocked up Yunho's throat as he started to respond but then realized he would be saying the boy was in his room, and Yoochun's mind would run straight down the path Yunho's mind has already gone so many times. Instead, the hazel eyed man just stuttered and held out a hand in mock explanation as he tried to summon something to say.
Jaejoong picked that time to come out from the hall with a skip and introduced himself to Yoochun with a low bow. "You're the chef?" The man stuttered with his index finger pointing towards the raven haired boy.
"Yes, though I'm not trained," he trailed off but Yoochun shook his hand in dismissal.
"Never mind that!" Yoochun now jabbed his finger towards Yunho's dazed face. "Yunho, what the hell were you thinking calling me up about letting this guy work in the kitchen!" The taller man tensed up thinking that Yoochun was going to yell at him, his mind instantly coming up blank with how he could defend the stranger in his living room, but then the restaurant owner continued, "with a face like his he needs to be a waiter and nothing else!"
Yunho and Jaejoong shared a sigh of relief as the other continued. "He is so pretty! He would make the best waiter! Draw in the girls with his face and make them tell their friends," he smiled a bit as he walked closer to Jaejoong.
"You think I'm pretty?" the raven haired boy asked in sugary sweetness. Yoochun exclaimed his agreement with wide arms and Jaejoong eagerly huddled beside him as they started rambling on about how the boy is the best suited for the job.
Yunho felt a headache press as he watched the two almost visibly click together right in the middle of his living room. Rubbing the bridge of his nose, he shuffled his feet out of the living room and into his bedroom. His dark mutter of, "I wasn't aware you were running a host club," gone unnoticed by the pair as he slipped away
