Gruesome Twosome Day 30: Monster House

Yay! An animated Halloween story today...and it's not Charlie Borwn, Ichabod Crane, or ducklings annoying Donald. It is Monster House.

This movie begins like so many other: don't go near the creepy old neighborhood house. Then the story veers off in its own direction. Young DJ lives across the street from the creepy house. He keeps a log of weirdness and wants to solve the mystery he believes is the outside his window. No adults in the film believe anything he sees. His best friend Chowder helps him and keeps him from getting too bogged down...until Halloween when they both slide over the edge into obsession. They save cookie seller Jenny and the trio start an adventure to find out what makes the old house so evil.

It mocks me with its house-ness.

The house is alive. It has eyes, mouth, teeth, heart, and even an uvula. The children eventually enter the house after failing to get the babysitter, the police, or any other responsible (there is a person to assist them. People, not just toys, begin disappearing into the house. They really have no choice but to try to conquer the house and save the people.

It's a fun movie for all ages. Adults will see themselves and their friends on screen. Children will see themselves and their friends on screen. It's relateable, creative, scary, and sweet but not syrupy.

See it. It's PG NOT G. Don't sit your five-year-old down and then wonder off to do chores.

The scares can be shocking, keep young kids away from this one unless you know they're not easily upset. Eight is just about the right age, maybe six or seven depending on the child. Ours had no problem at that age, but many parents online have lamented their six-year-olds needed a nightlight after this movie.

Read ManWithPez's review. Did he love this movie as much as I?
