Patriotism in a Mexican Restaurant

May 02, 2007 23:49

Today for lunch, we went to Maria's. Maria's is the best restaurant that's just around the corner from work, but their brand of Mexican can induce an afternoon food coma. With Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, they've got a "Mexican Flag" on special all week. It's a beef enchilada with red sauce, a chicken enchilada with a white sauce, and a pork enchilada with green, tomatillo-based sauce. Everyone else at the table ordered the Flag in its usual configuration. I love, love, love the tomatillo sauce and I'm not too fond of the sour cream in the sauce on the chicken, so I asked for green instead of the white. I thought that would just mean a change to tomatillo sauce on the chicken. Instead, she brought me two pork enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and a beef enchilada on a separate plate. OK, that works too, I thought, but it turned out to be too much food. The two pork enchiladas would've been just right. When the bill arrived, I saw that my pork enchiladas cost as much as the Mexican flag, and the beef had been added from the a la carte menu. Maybe she was punishing me for disrupting the patriotism of the special.
