A Plea for the New Emacs

My preferred editor these days is viper, one of the vi emulators in emacs. I get the keyboarding terseness of vi with the kitchen sinkness of emacs. Heaven, I tell you! While I used to adore the ange-ftp library in emacs, I'm now fond of TRAMP instead. Both allow the use of files on remote servers almost as if they were local, but TRAMP does it over SSH instead of FTP. TRAMP is installed by default in the next version of emacs, but the next version of emacs is already almost a year overdue, and then I'll need to wait for the Windows port. Aargh!

I had an SSH session to the server that hosts my sites going. I was doing some light editing, and I wanted to paste a book's ISBN. Since escapes get lost for some strange reason when I use emacs in a terminal window, I was using vi. Unfortunately, normal vi provides no indication of insert mode or command mode. I accidentally pasted the ISBN in command mode, meaning my next command was repeated 387026207 times. Aargh! I had to kill the SSH session after a few minutes of waiting.

emacs, geeky, i hate computers
