When headphones become deadphones

I'm going nuts not wearing headphones today. I can hardly stand the feeling of being at my desk without them. I've been using a pair of active noise cancellation headphones at work since 1997. I'm now getting an unacceptable humming noise in them when I turn on the cancellation, and not nearly enough volume the rest of the time.

I could replace these with the same thing for about $40. Those suffer from some significant interface problems, though. The biggest problem is the box that does the computing, which has to rest in my lap because the cord from it to the headphones isn't long enough to stay reliably on the desk. I see that I can get some by Targus for under $60, but those are targeted towards travel noise, not computer and ventilation noise. There probably isn't much difference.

The EX29 could be a winner, especially since it just features excellent isolation instead of fancy circuitry, but the price is a touch high. For that kind of money, I would also want to be able to replace the cord, but that doesn't seem possible. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
