A Lost Flavor Regained

Tonight ddmerillat came over with marinated chicken and fresh broccoli. I asked about the contents of the marinade. Dave said he didn't know, since it came out of a bottle. "Which bottle?" "Wegmans Zesty & Savory". That sounded promising. We baked the chicken, steamed the broccoli, made a pasta side, and were good to go. On the first bite, I knew I'd found something extraordinary.

After my maternal grandparents moved to Virginia, I was introduced to Cracker Barrel. On any given trip, at least one of the meals would be breakfast at Cracker Barrel. They had, you see, the Country Boy Breakfast. Most of the details elude me, but it offered a choice of three meats. One of them was steak. It wasn't the best cut of meat, but the marinade made it exquisite. We tried to wheedle some details on it out of the staff, but this was apparently something of a secret.

My Mother and I stopped at a Western New York Cracker Barrel in the Summer of 1997, only to discover the absence of that wondrous breakfast steak on the menu. I vowed never to return unless they restored that glorious item. Now I no longer care, for I have found that flavor again, and it is both Zesty and Savory. Long live Wegmans!
