Is there a good historical reason for detached garages?

I'm currently shopping for a new domicile. Condo/townhouse living, with its lack of exterior maintenance, sounds like a winner to me. A remarkable number of townhouse listings in the Rochester area lack attached garages. I'd really like to know why this is true. Was there a time when cars were considered too explosive to keep in the house? I'm imagining the scenario for rain. "Well, I know my car will be dry tomorrow, but my belongings and I will still get wet on our way to the door!" I imagine it's even sillier in the winter. "Well, my car won't have any new snow on it, but there's no chance of the snow it's accumulated on my drive melting. The garage is as cold as the Great [sic] Outdoors!

The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it seems. I've lived in houses that are twice the age of any of these places, and they all had attached garages! Was it fashionable in the Fifties, only to be out of vogue in the Seventies?
