Rufus has been sick for the last 10 days. He presumably has a deep inner ear infection. His head is cocked to one side and his equilibrium is completely off. The poor little guy can't stand up straight and keeps falling over on his head. It's hard to watch. There are two issues: 1) the vet can't see in to his ear canals because they are too narrow & collapsed, and 2) the strongest oral antibiotics have had no affect in 10 days. Basically, the vet has no idea how to treat whatever this is because she can't see it. It could be an ear infection, a blockage, a tumor... she just doesn't know since the medicine isn't working to relax the ear canals and allow visibility. So now my baby has to go in for surgery on Monday morning to find out what the hell is wrong. Sigh.
Rufus is not even 2 years old and has had ear infections all his life. The biggest scare in this whole thing is that once we can fix this particular infection, the vet is suggesting we surgically close off his ear canals permanently to prevent further infections. This would render him deaf. Sigh.
Mike is already trying to prepare me for the possibility this is an inoperable condition. He even mentioned eventually having to put Rufus down. What the hell is wrong with people? Sigh.
