Jack hefted a full box onto his shoulders. “No problem,” He heard Miko respond as she carried a similar sized crate down the stairwell. “It’s what friends do.”
Raf opened the flaps of yet another cardboard container, peaking inside to see what treasures had been hidden away.
When Jack returned for a new load, he saw what Raf had discovered - promptly forgetting why he was up here. “What did you find?” Jack asked, slidding down to the bare floor.”
Silently Raf opened the photo album, wider, revealing the organized baby pictures. “This contains all the memories I have of my birth mother.”
“You’re adopted?” Miko shrieked from behind the two boys. “Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Visiting hours were over, the attending nurses could have ordered her home. They didn’t. Wouldn’t demand she leave as long as the comatose patient didn’t worsen.
“How is he?” Miles Lancaster entered the room, let Mikaela sit in the sole chair provided for visitors. “Has his condition changed?”
Miss Banes reached over, picked up Sam’s undamaged hand, held it . “He’s not getting worse.” Mikaela responded at last. “But he’s not improving either.”
Miles leaned over, wrapped his hands around Mikaela’s and Sam’s. “Get Well soon, Bro.”
Silence returned to the room, broken only by the steady beep of the monitors tracking Sam’s heart rate and slow breathing.
“Sam’s doing better than several others from Mission City.” Miles let go, retreated, unwilling to let anyone see the tears brimming in his eyes, or his fear Sam would never wake up.
Mikaela remained, watching and waiting for some sign of life - any indication Sam was fighting to return to them.
