TITLE: Rip Van Winkle CHARACTER: Skyfire, Starscream SERIES: Generation 1 RATING: K+ Warnings: Pre War AUTHOR: Rose0mary Word COUNT: 468 Prompt #1 Time Travel
You know, I find I like the interaction between Skyfire and Starscream - despite having so little canon to go off of. (can't find any comics, so all I have for reference are the cartoon series). Haven't figured out the differences in headset canon yet. They should be in the same universe and the second, longer piece is a look at the aftermath.
Yep. Starscream is a complicated figure - he's got hidden depths that are hard to see, hard to find, and even harder to capture. But that makes it much more fun (and invigorating) to write him. Thanks for your kind comments. I do try to stay close to the portrays I see and not leave them cardboard cut-outs.
Oh man! Now I do want to write a equal for that scene. Do you mind if I quote your comment directly? (And yes, Jazz's reaction would be very comical).
I don't think there is anything nice or pleasant about war. Not even the fact that WW2 helped American recover from the Great Depression, giving hundreds of out-of-work people jobs to do to support the men, boys, fathers, and sons who went off to fight. Bart of that unthinking obedience is instilled during boot-camp. You still retain your personality and individuality, but the mold of the 'perfect' fighting machine has gotten a hold of you. Men (and women) can't do their jobs properly if they are always asking 'why' or delaying obeying until every single detail of the plan and operation is verbalized to their satisfaction.
Starscream and Skyfire must have once been a fascinating team. ^^ And I love that it shows that yes, even Starscream was once a different mech. I also only have the cartoons and an essay a friend sent me a few weeks ago about their relationship. If you're interested, I'll search for it.
Yep, that's all the fun with him. :) I mean he is the SIC so we can deduce that he's at least moderately competent, and he has a gift of inspiring mechs to follow him (surprising as this is).
Then write! :D I would love to read it! And no, I don't mind at all. ^^
As a business student I have to point out, that while it's true that the WW2 helped America out it was essentially just a huge QE programm not seen until well now actually again. They could've had the same effects much cheaper and with less loss of lives. Though the whole thing helped in the end to assert the dominance of the USA.
Never understood the sense of boot camps. There are only few types of human who profit, everyone else is just broken and beaten down.
There are several interesting researches about obedience. The quintessence was always that obedience eradicates the persons sense of good and evil. They obey and take no responsibility for their actions anymore. They see themselves just as "loyal" tools, nothing more. :|
Yep. Absolutely fascinating. Why else would Starscream/Skyfire be so popular? Plus, I just love the dynamics. Would you? That would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Competency means something in the Con ranks - and the Autobot ranks under Optimus Prime too.
I'll see what I can do - no promises.
Yes, it could have gone differently. And a lot of the time, we just don't see the side effects - benefits or costs and losses - until long after the program is over, or its too late to change.
I don't get boot camps either - aside from their use as testing grounds to see who 'has the mantle' to go through the worst and come through it alive. (Supposedly anyway. Sometimes it just brings out the worst and leaves a lot of hearts broken, spirits beaten, and bodies wrecked)
Obedience: now there's something that can be debated to the end of the earth. Well, combine it with "it was out of my hands" and "I wash my hands clean of any blood" when they full well could have decided to ignore the orders?! We're not drones! And drones do only as they are programed, no questions, no hesitation, no edging the line/toeing the fence. Yeash, I think I might have discovered an unknown soapbox of mine. I'll stop before it turns into a rant.
Sorry, took a while to find it again, but here is the link: http://www.transformersfanfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=4951&chapter=1 Fair warning, the title of the essay "More than you ever wanted to know about Skyfire" is deserved. ^^ But she also goes into great detail with Starscream and it's written well.
True. I love competent Cons, though.
That's fine. :)
Yeah, a professor of mine actually held a whole lecture about the trouble of "timing" and why the effects so often come a few months late.
Couldn't say it better. I think it's also kind of a perverted justice feeling. "We're the good guys and so we can humilate you, you've agreed after all."
No, we're not drones. And we can not be absolved by the guilt of what we do, because ultimately humans (we) always *have* a choice. Some people just don't want to think and just forget. They just go along with the rest, no matter what the rest is or wants. *grins* Rant on, I don't mind because I also could rant on this for a good while.
