WORD: Cabriole - A curvet, a leap, a caper (see also Capriole)
Cabriole loved dancing. She lived for dancing - even when she wasn’t dancing, her feet still sought the rhythm, the tempo, the beat. Cabriole didn’t know why others couldn't/wouldn't/didn't enjoy the melodies she heard everywhere she went. “Life is but a dream,” Cabriole frequently hummed to herself when she was a youngster, exploring everywhere she could walk.
Like many who grew up during the Golden Era, Cabriole was allowed to wander, to explore. Her guardians and caretakers knew she’d always come back, and she knew they’d always be waiting for her.
Until the joor everything changed. One moment, Stanix was as peaceful and prosperous as it had been for generations, the next moment, nothing was the same.
Cabriole fell on her face before the EMP bomb went off - the music only she heard had cut off, and Cabriole faltered, unable to understand why the music stopped. Those around her, the adults on their way to the communication hub, in the streets, they all fell. Unlike Cabriole, they never stood up again. The electromagnetic pulse had deactivated many of them without warning.
Then, the rebels arrived, and destroyed the communication nodule, disrupting the entire grid. Her legs, frozen by the blast, could not support Cabriole, and even if they could, she was trapped underneath graying shells of strangers. Buried beneath others, the invaders did not notice her. After destroying the node, the rebels ran, scattering everywhere. They fired randomly into the motionless sea of dead frames, as they made their escape. One of the plasma bolts barely missed Cabriole - if she’d been capable of moving, she’d have jerked back, trying to escape the laserbeam and its destructive edge.
The Autobots arrived after the last of the rebels left. They searched diligently for survivors, finding a few here, a few there. Cabriole was one of the last rescued. Now free and able to move, Cabriole tried to leave, needing to find her guardians. They’d been in the communications center when it blew.
Finding the mangled frames of her guardians, Cabriole found she could no longer dance. “It is too soon,” she told herself, unable to find the rhythm. She stopped trying to identify the tempo. When she realized she’d encountered yet another beat, she stopped. Even though she could stop the dance, even though the music had left her, she was still lithe and graceful on her feet.
That worked in her favor. Being able to weave her slender frame between the bigger bots, meant Cabriole wasn’t stuck behind the larger mechs. Her petite frame could fit into spaces others became trapped in. Slowly, surely, Cabriole learned that the love of dancing had only been an expression of what she was meant to be.
Originally, her goal in life had been to become a world-renowned dancer, an entertainer. Her leaps and twirls had always been special, but dancing had been her passion. Her guardians been encouraged to find what they liked, and to seek out what interested them, so they supported her, as Cabriole taught herself to dance to the music only she heard. After Stanix had been attached, and its inhabitants relocated, Cabriole realized dancing had been only a small part of what she was capable of.
So, Cabriole found herself teaching others how to maneuver in crowds without being seen. How to climb above the mob and leap over large gaps that would otherwise slow one down. She had many interested students, but none stood out as much as the silver mech named Jazz.
Jazz slowly taught Cabriole to love music again. But no one could get her to dance ever more.
