Warnings: The situation of Cybertron just prior to recontact with the Ark and Nemesis' crews was bad. Shockwave is not a nice mech. But not nearly as grim or as horrifying as it could be.

Caia's one of the people I consider a G1-expert and her fics are so close to canon it's seamless. Except, of course, instead of being cracky like G1 is, this fic is lovely and deliciously dark. It has beautiful worldbuilding, an almost palpable sense of mood, and the story structure itself works to carry the message of tedium and loneliness and encroaching hopelessness. And, Shockwave! (He's his own squee). Ruthlessly logical, fiercely loyal, even he begins to succumb to despair. It's...amazing. One of those stories that haunts you.
