Odd one:
Shockwave is rumored to be sparkless, nothing more than a central-computer uplinked to drones, or a rouge programming running amuck in a mobile body. What if all those rumors were true? Shockwave IS NOT A CYBERTRONIAN!
My thought: Transferred through time, Virgil (Vigilant-model computer, programmed to protect humans), first developed a drone body, then upgrades his central frame, adding software and editing his own programming. Thus, as the eons go by, Virgil becomes Shockwave
I. Virgil, not blocked from acting, by the directive to protect humans, he focuses in improving the robots (Transformers), to be better guardians/war machines/cultivators, whatever humans might need if they ever reach Cybertron.
II. Viril, torn by programming conflict, created two frames, two drones, two backgrounds. One would focus on protecting others, the other would focus on protecting himself - and work on finding ways to defeat the robots that came so close to destroying his frame so soon after activation.

Prowl didn’t survive the fall of Prasis city: When his spark failed, the frame continued fighting. After the guttering of Prowl’s spark, his emotions vanished, and the second-in-command really became a ‘sparkless drone’ acting only on the last orders given: ‘defend the Autobots/defeat the Decepticos/Protect Cybertron’.
(Rescue Bots - Where Did Virgil come from?)
There aren't a lot of 'think tanks' out there ... okay, there might be more than I think.
Anyway, … Scientists living (and working in Eureka, under Global Dymanics (funded by the Department of Defense), came up with the brilliant idea of creating a computer program that would protect humans. Against Anything and everything. During the trial run, it is turned on, and starts to run amuck.
Sheriff Jack Carter is NOT Happy that the scientists forgot to put in a cut-off-switch/fail-safe. The only way to get the Vigiliant computer to turn itself off (because they can’t stop it), is to promise it a brand new facility, with real dangers instead of the false alarms they were using to test Vigil’s response coding.
They intended to ship the vigilant program to some far-forgotten corner of the world … however, Virgil anticipated this attempt at circumventing the promise, so he put in his own request for a transfer --- and ended up in Griffin Rock, ready to be installed.
SHATTERED GLASS revamp:
This alternate universe/mirror reality, is how the Decepticons (Megatron and underlings/troops) views themselves, their fight, and their goals - to protect humans from the evil Autobots, and save their world, bringing back the Golden Age and its prosperity to all Cybertrons.
How will the Autobots react when they finally figure out how their actions to prevent the last remaining groups of neturals from being slaughtered/conscripted are seen as, from the optics of outsiders?
Will they ever realize that Decepticons see Megatron as the ‘good’ guy despite his temper and other faults (like, being prone to violence)?
The Golden Age never ended:
The two warring factions aren’t at war - they belong to the same army: are troops undergoing realistic-boot camp training … in preparation for the war Prowl, The Senate, Perceptor, Starscream, and other mechs KNOW is coming: war against the creators, _____________ (substitute favorite alien race: I.E. ‘The Borg’, ‘The Yuuzhan Vong’ ‘Replicators’, ‘Wraith’ ‘the Shadows’ ‘The Dominion’ (Changlings, Vorta, Jem’Hadar), just to name a few possibilities)
The problem is - neither Megatron nor Optimus Prime are listening to their second-in-command, and are unable to stop engaging each other, unwilling to give up while the other is ahead in ‘battles won’. It’s creating a real hassle for both the moral officers (Jazz, Soundwave), and those tracking inventory (everyone else).
The solution: Prowl and Stasrcream (along with others), substitute fake weapons for their real weapons - not one of the troops want to kill mechs they were trained alongside.
