universe… G1 / IDW or Bayverse is what I'm picturing. If a writer can make it work with another universe that would be fine too, though it's hard for me to picture it with TF:A ( Read more... )

favorite ten autobots, in orde: prowl, red alert, jazz, springer, optimus prime, ratchet, first aid, ironhide, silverbolt, skyfire

favorite decepticon is megatron, no joke

dunno if that helps.

ultimately, if you're writing the story, it's up to you how mandatory, or constant it is.

if it was mandatory, then we wouldn't have an outsider!prowl, would we? i was thinking a *very* strongly encouraged social convention. something that it's very difficult to interact with your peers without, but is something that can technically be done without. trying to think of an example…. like talking maybe? someone can, with a lot of effort go through life without talking, but it makes interacting with people nearly impossible. and even when it is possible, people might avoid interacting with that person because it makes them uncomfortable. that's my thought, but is still up to you.

and (again my thought, you can take it or leave it) my thought about the hive mind(s) is that they're constant and could only be "turned off" by completely blocking electronic communications, like two computers that are in constant connection to each other via a wifi connection. the connection could be disrupted by an outside source, or a comp removed from the network, or turned off, or even lag, but as long as they remain in contact, they're exchanging information -- connected to the hive mind.

does that help?

I was thinking, on peaceful Cybertron it was strongly encouraged after graduating from an Academy to choose a group, kind of like a divergent like society. Once they upgrade to adult its a requirement. There might be some, with extremely good faking skills that could go by without, or some that their function is to watch over the other hive minds from an outside point of view, one that could disconnect and test a new comer or something.

When I think of a hive mind, I think of a group that has thoughts the exact same: we need Energon, we need to repaint, we need a check-up.

if you can make that work in a story, that could be interesting.
