Y'know, the basic plot of this looked vaguely familiar. From the story itself:

Let's leave the awful, awesome ridiculousness bits of crack to LittleMewLugia, please. S/he can carry it off (well, the ones I've read, anyway). Or I'm strange in thinking that. Whatever.

I can't tell you how often I've backbuttoned out of a fic where Starscream defects to the Autobots for one reason or another and NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM suspects for a moment that he might just have ulterior motives. Or else ONE Autobot is suspicious (usually Prowl or Red Alert) but promptly get shouted down by all the others because CAN'T YOU HE'S A VICTIM WHO DESERVES OUR SYMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING? It's ridiculous.*

*Just once I'd like to see a fic where Starscream comes to the 'Bots with some sob story about how Megatron beats him constantly, begs for asylum, gets it, and then proceeds to rob them blind and/or stab them all in the back because it was all just part of some elaborate plot to get inside their base. The 'bots would have to be portrayed as incredibly, OOCly stupid to fall for it, but at least Starscream would be in character.

*Actually there is a fic like that, though I've since lost track of it frustratingly enough. It's wonderfully long and the Autobots did have all sorts of suspicions, Starscream didn't even tell his wingmates that it was all a trick so they would react more believably, even the reader is fooled until the end.

Read it once, lost it, been looking for it again since.

Would you be talking about this one? It has Starscream defecting, even if it happens around chapter 9 (of 20), and it does have the 'not telling his wingmates' bit that you mentioned.

Unfortunately that's not the one I'm thinking of, it had a larger main cast and followed the POVs of bots like Fireflight and Thundercracker too. Pretty sure the 'defection' happened in an earlier, if not the earliest, chapter of the fic.

Anyone ever read that story in the Legens Anthology novel where Starscream gets amnesia and the Autobots attempt to rehabilitate him? That's a defection story done RIGHT. Soon as he gets his memories back, Starscream returns to Megatron and contemplates how he can use Optimus' examples of compassion to gain the Decepticons trust so he can overthrow Megatron. Heh heh.
