Fate & Free Will in Lux

Going by the last 2 - 4 episodes of the series, the situation posed to us in Texhnolyze is the 'death of humanity', as opposed to Nietzsche's and Hardy's "death of God". However, at times, I wonder if certain events in Texhnolyze could have prevented the eventual demise of humanity, or if things were meant to be that way.

To begin with, did Ichise really have to return to Lux just to get Ran ? Or, if he had the chance, and assuming events had been reworked in that way, could he have managed to escort Ran to safety before she could be captured by Kano's shapes ? The latter seems improbable, since it requires Ichise having to do so and realise this quite early, but it's the only way a good resolution, if any, could be drawn for this series. Also, what if Shinji had gone to the Opera House instead of the hill ? True, he was already mad and misguided, but at least sparing the already tired Ichise of having to decapitate Kano would be better.

That being said, the events of Texhnolyze, do, on foresight, seem to indicate that some things were meant to have happened. Onishi would not have been able to hear 'the voice of the city', or be the great Mafia leader he was, if not for the legs he donated to Kano. Even if he hadn't donated his legs to Kano, Kano would still have obtained texhnolyzed  legs, but it was those metal legs that gave Onishi the resilience to elad ana rmy that could withstand Kano's onslaught for some time. Also, despite Ichise's intentions, he didn't have to return to the surface as he had already made peace with one ghost in his life; his father.

And so I ask you all.... could the death of humanity as presented in Texhnolyze ? Or was it all... 'meant to be'.
