Our oldest grandchild had a birthday last week, and the party was yesterday. Her mother let me have it at my house, and we just had a wonderful time.
Kai is twelve this year, and she wanted a party. She needed a party. Our family doesn't have a birthday party every year because it just seems sort of not something our brood has been all that into, really. But this year, she wanted it. Since she has home-schooled for the past year, I think it was especially important.
Her mom and I put together a ridiculous menu - ridiculous because of the vast quantities of food. (We haven't done this in so long that we're not very well-versed in how much or of what.) But it worked out that we'll just not cook much this week.
Kai wanted an ice cream sundae bar and that was one of the highlights. The other was the huge water slide we were able to get for the weekend. (Thanks, Dolly!) Because that contraption as well as the bounce house had to be set up a day early, we actually partayed for a solid twenty-four hours. That thing is *FUN*! We have our own little trailer trash redneck pool setup, which is just one of those things that erects itself as it fills, covered by a $99 instant carport. Between those three instruments, a fantastic time was had by all - young and old alike. There's nothing quite as delightful as a water toy in the July heat of Florida. Well, except when one of the guests, seven-year-old Rianna, is grinning at you and squirting you in the face as you rise from the pool after splashing down the bodacious slide. We talked about that and she did not do it twice.
I wish we could do that every weekend during the summer. Everybody was so chill and loving it. I met a couple of people I've been anxious to get to know for a while and saw my old bestie with whom I'd been out of touch for several years. My ego was nicely stroked for my decorating and culinary skillz - everybody looooved my tarragon deviled eggs - so what more could I ask for?
By the way, those deviled eggs are the easiest ever. The yolks are just whirred in the mini food processor, then some mayo (not a bunch) is whirred into it, and finally a big dollop of whipped cream cheese and a scant pinch of salt. That's it for the filling. After stuffing the whites, drop a few crumbles of tarragon right from the jar onto each, and you will have a lot of happy eaters.
