Strip Clubbing

There's a street outside my office that floods every time it rains heavily. I can amuse myself on days like today watching the cars attempt to cross the flooded area.

Right now, there's a Jeep Cherokee sitting dead in the middle of the water as a cautionary tale to other cars, though of course, this being Texas, a lot of people think they can make it. It's been funny watching the decisionmaking process.

I'm reminded of my mother's car-flooding-out-in-the-middle-of-a-rainstorm story. This was probably my freshman year of college, since Claudia was attending her freshman year of high school. My mom was driving down Sage Road, behind the Galleria to pick up Claudia from school. She was in a 1990 BMW 325i red convertible, probably the cutest car she's ever had.* She was doing fine through a high water part of the street when a pick up truck passsed her going at 40 miles per hour and thoroughly flooded out the engine.

The car died.

Considering how close it is to a densely populated area of Houston, that part of Sage Road is actually quite deserted. Except for one establishment: The Men's Club.

My mom got out of her car, and walked--getting thoroughly drenched in the process--to the Men's Club. The valet sort of raised an eyebrow, but he didn't stop her at the front door. The person at the front, though, looked appalled at this soccer mom looking woman in her late 40s standing in the front lobby of the establshiment. This was not the sort of woman that would encourage regulars to continue their patronage (at least in the getup she was wearing at the time, my mom can look quite hot, actually).

My mom asked for a phone, and they quickly ushered her to the back room where the dancers wait before they go on stage.

So, for an afternoon, my mother hung out with strippers at the Men's Club while she waited for a tow truck to come and get her car. She said they were all very nice.

*The car ultimately succumbed to the car gods in another flood in 2001 during Tropical Storm Alyson outside of the Wataburger on Shephard and Greenbriar. It was in Claudia's possession at that time, and Claudia was devastated when she learned that it was declared totaled by the insurance company.

car, mama
