what happened to west university with all those lovely gorgeous homes being torn down for mcmansions with a strip of grass in the front as a yard should serve as a warning.

i distinctly remember woody allen making a highly derogatory comment some years ago about houston's habit of tearing down landmark original construction and building condos on top of it, compared to new york where that wasn't the case. it's not just houston, it's everywhere. new york is now following suit - tearing down the original construction in the east village and the lower east side, kicking folks out, and paving the way for brand new condos that nobody can afford and add nothing to the community or the neighborhood as a whole.

i peruse the real estate listings in the chronicle from time to time, only because i do want to own property in houston and i'd love to get an old house for a relatively low price and fix it up. what amazes me in the listings are the photos of property from old tiny bungalows that need some expanding and work. these houses are shot from the outside only, and the other photos of the property are not of the inside of the house but actually photos of what is NEXT to the property - townhomes, clearly baiting the wouuld-be buyer to buy the property and slap up a townhome, because certainly there's not ENOUGH of those.
