The block

This morning, I stopped at a local drugstore to pick up my fix, and I found my usual checkout guy otherwise engaged. Since I need diet coke approximately every other day, I've gotten to know the guy who works in the mornings at the front checkout fairly well. This particular drugstore has the photo lab right at the checkout, and my guy doubles as the photo manager.

I went to the diet coke pile, found a twelve pack (this particular store has had some major supply issues in the past, so I always breathe a heavy sigh of relief when there's diet coke, though I've been assured that the logistics people have worked everything out), and turned the corner to find my guy holding a camera, a woman waving candy, and a four year old little girl standing against a wall who was crying her eyes out. The little girl's mother had come in for a passport photo. The little girl did not want to have her passport photo taken. The photo guy was just holding the camera awkwardly.

There didn't appear to be much hope for resolution here, so I wished everyone luck and bought my diet coke.

I hope the little girl eventually makes it to Brazil or Tanzania or wherever it is that she needs a passport photo for.

In other news, inspiration struck as I was driving home yesterday and I have decided to go ahead and do NaNoWriMo. My modest goal is to beat last year's 1239 words. I think I can do that, if only because I'm going to be stuck on planes, in airports and in hotels almost all next week on business travel. What does this mean for you, dear readers? Not much. I imagine that I'll journal more in order to procrastinate writing more.
