I saw Serenity last night, and I thought it was really good.

If you liked Firefly, I think you'll like Serenity. I'm not in a position to be able to tell if you'll get a lot of Serenity if you didn't watch Firefly. I think it's similar, in some ways, to the X-Files movie in that respect. I guess it sort of goes back to that Neal Stephenson geek/veg editorial from last week.

The crowd was a friendly one. Everyone seemed to laugh in the right place, cheer in the right place and generally be supportive of the movie. Summer Galu, who plays River, was there. She had some things to say at the beginning about how great it was to be back in Texas. She looked really nervous and said something about her dad and grandfather being in the audience. There was a card going around for Joss's birthday. Uh, Happy Birthday Joss, sorry I didn't get to sign your card...

The movie opened with a plea from Joss to spread the word. He mentioned how crazy they were to make the movie given lack of stars in the cast, lack of support of the show, and the general failure of the show from the start. It was typical Joss.

It'd been awhile since I'd seen any original Joss writing. I'd forgotten how well he writes dialogue. I'd forgotten how funny he can be. I'd forgotten what his direction is like with a cast he knows well.

His intro begged people who liked the movie to talk it up. Unfortuantely, it probably won't do me much good given that everyone I know is already a Joss Whedon devotee (the products, not necessarily the man...). Hell, half my friends list has probably already seen Serenity.

But if you haven't, go see it when it comes out on September 30. It's a good movie.

And way to go Joss.
