This week, I've heard a lot on the radio about Dr. King's march on Washington in 1963. My mother was there. She was working on radiocarbon dating for the National Geological Survey, and she was still in college, not quite 19 years old. She said that a lot of people didn't go to work that day because they thought there might be looting or rioting because of the march. No one had any idea how much it would impact the rest of the world. At around lunch time, she and her friends decided to go and see what was going on. No one would care if they didn't get back in time to finish work that day. They managed to stand right on the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial. She said it was an absolutely amazing thing to be a part of, and that she's proud that she was there. I'm also proud of her for being there, and it's funny because we found out a few weeks ago that my great great great grandmother (my mother's grandmother's grandmother) had been at Gettysburg when Lincoln gave his historical speech. My grandmother told us this when she was with us in New Mexico. She mentioned that she didn't ever want to tell us about the Yankee Civil War activities of the family when we were in Texas, because we were in the South. My mother and I looked incredulously at her as if she'd lost her mind and reminded her that yes, technically Texas was in the confederacy BUT that we were Hispanic and could have cared less about such things PLUS it was over 140 years ago!! My grandmother has funny ideas sometimes.
I heard today that some polling came back and Bush's approval ratings are the lowest they've been since he took office.
Poll: More Americans Now Want Bush Out of Office
For the first time since he took office, opinion polls now show more Americans want President Bush to be out of office rather than be re-elected.
A new Newsweek poll found 49 percent of Americans are opposed to his re-election. Only 44 percent backed Bush’s run in 2004.
In addition, some 69 percent of those polled expressed concern the U.S. would be bogged down in Iraq.
Overall Bush’s approval rating has plummeted from 71 percent in April to 53 percent today.
