Friday August 7: Mallorca

Aug 28, 2009 18:58

I'm in Santa Ponca, a small town on the outskirts of Palma de Mallorca, the capitol and largest city on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Our hotel is the Playa del Rey, with a balcony that looks into the balconies of the apartment next door, and together we have a view to the beach. We arrived on the island yesterday afternoon, for four days of fun and relaxation in sand and sun. Relaxing would be far easier if my asscheeks weren't sunburned.

Today we ate breakfast in a small diner, where I had a disappointing Spanish omelet - not the fault of the diner I'm sure, just the fault of my taste buds - but amazing fresh pressed orange juice (zuma de oranja.) Then we found a rental car for Sunday, so that we can drive out to the Dragon Coves, the town of Porto Cristo, and Father Juniper Serra's house. I would also like to go to Cala Figuera, only because I've read they have the best beaches there.

I don't like the way the clouds are looking right now. We left Garmisch for a reason.

tomorrow we're taking the bus in to Palma to go to the Cathedral, then shop and lay on the beach. Hopefully we'll find a tapas bar there.
Amazing food we've had so far:
-Jamon con Melon (prosciutto-like ham with melon)
-Sangria!
-baguettes with olives, jamon y chorizo with gouda (all from the market)

Night
I am in extreme pain. My back and ass are lobster red. The backs of my knees, too. I am suffering.

I just finished reading Travels with Charley, by John Steinbeck. I also packed Catcher in the Rye to read on this trip. The next thing I want to download off iTunes is the audiobook the Lost City of Z. I should read something about Africa, too.

Next summer I want to travel to the West Coast. I've never been there. I could spend a week in California, then drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to Oregon and Washington. I'd like to make it up to Vancouver, too.

I'm going to write some more postcards.
