Egypt Journal: Cairo Day 1 - May 10

May 25, 2009 20:30

I realize this is a dumb and obvious thing to say, but I feel so out of place here. We are the only white faces here. I wish I had a veil. I feel naked with my hair showing. I thought there would be some tourists out and about. Nope. Cairo. What an overwhelming first taste of the Middle East. Loud, busy streets, neon burning bright, the smell of smoke mingled with exhaust and a touch of amber. It's a city full of insomniacs - children are running around at almost midnight. Tomorrow we have a private driver to take us to Giza, Sakkara and Memphis, for 180 LE - about $37. Hopefully tomorrow I can get recommendations for a tour in Jordan. Now we have to go to Jordan first, because of the visa issue. So - tomorrow, we'll go to the pyramids, then come back to the hostel around 5, shower, eat dinner, wander around, and take the midnight bus to Dahab.

I don't feel comfortable here. I don't feel safe. Part of that is the constant heckling and cat-calling. The biggest part isn't even the foreigner aspect - it's the big city aspect. I didn't feel comfortable in New York either.

The flight was awesome. Dinner and a movie on a three and a half hour flight. The movie was Bride Wars, which was really cute and made me cry. my dinner was salmon with rice an a pomegranate dessert. Yum.

This hostel is really nice -Brothers Hostel. We'll stay here the 18th, too.
