THE TOP FIVE
Very early on in the concerts, I decided that I couldn't pick one favourite part, it would have to be a list, a top five to be precise. I totally cheated, but I think I have finally whittled it down to just that:
5. Under The Boardwalk. My favourite song on the Jukebox album and the live version not only does it justice, but blows it out of the water! The arrangement, the a capella first verse, the classically doo-wop, harmonised ending - it is flawless.
4. Wishes. This is the song that introduced them to me, so it's always been special, but they did their alternate version from Tour 2000 which I absolutely ADORE and was an excellent throwback.
3a. The Brothers Medley. Andrew and Mike are responsible for some of my favourite songs in the Human Nature back catalogue (especially ballads like September Girl, She's So Gone, What If I Said, and Baby Come Back To Me). So when they did a duet medley of Counting Down, Whisper Your Name, Always Be With You, and Don't Say Goodbye, with Andrew on keys, I melted. It was a nostalgic way to showcase their songwriting talents.
3b. The Chocolate Wheel. Not only was this an incredible trip down memory lane, it was such a great way to include favourites that sometimes get overlooked. I've never been a huge fan of He Don't Love You and once would have been enough for me to hear When We Were Young, but I went mental EVERY single time Tellin' Everybody and Last To Know came up. Mike's amazing wig in Got It Goin' On was just gravy. I've never known them to leave songs to chance, so this was truly excellent.
2. The Key Change. Andrew's flawless key change in Unchained Melody. Every. Single. Night. He gets the build so right and the execution is amazing! So much more beautiful and haunting than the album version.
1. The Varsity Jackets Medley. That is by no means its official title, but it's the only way to describe my very favourite part of the show. The streetlamp, the jackets, and the illusion of a chilly lane-way provide the perfect backdrop for the guys to do what I've always loved most about them; ingenious arrangements and harmonies. An a capella of Only You, a throwback to their 1999 cover of Stay accompanied only by claps, a modern inclusion of
Meghan Trainor's All About The Bass, and a wickedly good Little Bitty Pretty One. They absolutely nail it!
