208: Four

Dec 07, 2007 12:24

The four most precious gifts she had received in her life had all come from Noah. The first flowers he ever gave her… she would cherish that memory forever. He’d been so adorably awkward, yet his smile had been confident. Like he’d known that, deep down, she’d never be able to resist him. He’d been right, of course, but then, it had almost rankled. After all, she was pretty, popular-she could have had her choice of men. Her friends had laughed when she’d told them who she was dating. But Noah… he’d been worth all of it.

The second was his biology notes. Not the most romantic of gifts, some would think, but then, they didn’t know Noah Bennet. He had copied them out by hand, clear and concise, with a trace of humor and very precise sketches. And it had made everything make sense, far more than the text or lectures ever had.

The third, a ring, and in extension his heart and life. It hadn’t been unexpected, but very welcome. Her mother had been horrified, of course. But then, her mother would have been horrified by anyone not of a good Texan family.

And then one day he’d brought home a beautiful baby girl. It was too good to be true, but she hadn’t questioned. She hadn’t wanted to know. She’d just wanted to keep her Claire, and be the perfect family. She’d wanted to believe that life could work that way, that everything could be wonderful.

Noah had given her everything she’d ever wanted, without her having to ask. He’d given her happiness.
