2. She turned from the oven in time to catch the look Claude was giving her husband. It was only Noah's obvious obliviousness that kept her from jumping to conclusions right then and there. But she could't help a little hint of doubt.
3. She watched them from the doorway, Claire scuttling across the floor in that fast crawl she'd gotten so good at, and Noah staring at her with a distant look in his eyes. It was that expression, when he thought she wasn't looking, that almost convinced her every so often that, no matter what he said, that they could never be perfectly happy like this. That he was disappointed in her, that she couldn't have his child. That Claire was a second-best replacement. She turned away.
4. "I won't be home for dinner tonight, honey. Paperwork piling up."
Sandra took a deep breath. "That's fine, Noah. I wasn't planning anything special, anyway."
"Oh, good. I'll see you tonight." There was a click, and she hung up the phone with a sigh.
A few minutes later had all of the ingredients back in the fridge. It would all keep until tomorrow. The kids would probably prefer grilled cheese, anyway.
5. She pulled the blanket tightly around her, fixedly keeping her eyes away from the bedroom door. She wasn't even going to bother wondering where he was this time. "Working" was starting to wear a little thin as an excuse.
