Having finally returned to it at the point where I left off last Summer, I have spent most of this Summer hammering away at chapter eight of my book (out of a projected total of nine). And I have just completed it. It was by far the toughest one to write -- as I knew all along that it would be, which no doubt contributed to my procrastinating so long over launching into it. And it has also ended up being by far the longest among them. Sixty single-spaced pages, and 37,000 words. Which really is far too long for a single chapter, so I'm going to have to figure out a tidy way to split it into two. But I'll do the final chapter first, which should be massively less taxing. In this chapter, I've had to go all the way from the opening verses of Genesis right up as far as String Theory, taking in just about everything in between. Next chapter, I get to indulge -- non-gratuitously! -- in considerably more fanciful and entertaining stuff about dancing ghosts.
And tomorrow I head off to Paris for a few days. I was hoping to get this done before I left, and I'm glad to have done so, so that I can go and make merry with a clear conscience.
