"it was fun, and funny, so we laughed"

Finding nothing else on at eight o'clock, I happened to find myself watching Mastermind tonight, and it turned out that there was some chap answering questions on the Manics. He ended up winning with 27 points, the other contestants trailing on 25, 23 and 19. But I thought: hey, hey, hey, I know this band! So I figured that I'd play along (at least on his questions), and I ended up with 24. A trifle disappointing, all in all (though do bear in mind that I hadn't revised!). But, in the heat of the moment, and against the clock, I found that I couldn't even remember elementary things like The Horse & Groom. Deary me!

Meanwhile, there's something that's been bugging me big-time for the last couple of days. See, I've finally (only twenty two years too late!) got round to getting hold of a copy of The Whitey Album by Ciccone Youth (i.e. Sonic Youth). I put it on and, half way through, it came to a spoken-word piece, 'Me & Jill', which I immediately recognised. It was sort of like déjà vu, only real. I know this track; I can even quote bits from it! And yet I have absolutely no idea how I know it. It's far too familiar just to be something that I might have heard played on the radio once in the 1980s. My first thought was that it might have been borrowed from Jim Carroll, or something like that, but it doesn't appear so. I've been racking my brains, scouring the internet for clues, checking compilation albums that I own, etc. But I genuinely cannot think of any way at all that I possibly could know it. And yet I do. It's a puzzler!

ETA: I've found it! It was included on a cassette I got from some girl I met at a party around 1988 or 1989, nestled uncredited between tracks by The Seeds and Pink Floyd. I knew I knew it from somewhere.

Also, I've been reading Kristin Hersh's 'Rat Girl'. I'm currently about half way through, and it's awesome. Especially for someone who effectively grew up with these songs: I'm lovin' it, lovin' it, lovin' it! The Bell Jar for the '80s alt-rock generation. :o)
