Beauty of the Forbidden
Chapter 1: The Idiot
Jonghyun overslept. Today of all days, when the day would start with yet another meeting, he overslept. He almost fell off the bed in panic. He was in such a rush that he didn't even mind eating breakfast or be nice. Jessica got angry at him for being so nasty, it's not like it was her fault Jonghyun was irresponsible and was late.
For a moment Jonghyun didn't know why he cared about getting in time in the first place. He never cared because he rarely was in time to begin with. But then he remembered his father having a meeting with a rival firm, something something about his dad wanting to buy whatever shit. Yes, that's how much Jonghyun knew about what was going on and honestly he had zero interest in finding out more about it. However, he did know it was an important meeting and his dad would be beyond furious when seeing Jonghyun's seat empty.
When arriving he almost forgot to lock his car. He briefly even considered taking the stairs to the sixth floor, till he decided the meeting was important, yes, but not important enough he was willing to get sweaty or do any kind of exercise this early for it. He took the elevator instead.
The elevator stopped - ding - and opened the doors painfully slow. Jonghyun, replying in his mind over and over again how his dad would scold him till end of eternity, didn't register someone standing in his way before it was too late. Paper and folders started flying everywhere, the sound gaining other peoples' attention, and Jonghyun cursed out loud.
“Watch where you're going!” he hissed. “Idiot.”
If the other male said anything Jonghyun didn't hear it. Not that it mattered because he had way more important things to tend to right now.
* * *
It was over, finally, and Jonghyun didn't feel even the slightest smarter after those three hours. He didn't feel anything except from boredom and tiredness and homesickness, kinda like how he felt as soon as he opened the main door to enter this building. Only it was a lot more intense right now: he was really bored and really tired and he really wanted to go home.
When the meeting ended Jonghyun had been the first one to leave, because if it was something he would avoid today at any cost it would be his father. He decided he needed a glass of water (actually, he knew his dad wouldn't be in the staff break room, that's why he decided to go there) before going back to his office to sign some papers he should have signed two days ago.
He was walking in the narrow corridor towards the staff break room, hands running over his hair to flatten the sides. Out of the blue he realized he owed Jessica an apology for this morning so he reached for his cellphone in the left pocked of his suit. Though he never made the call because when opening the door to his destination he saw a young boy standing at the kitchen sink there, his back facing Jonghyun. The boy was skinny, his hair brown and he was slightly taller than Jonghyun. Jonghyun put the cellphone back into his pocket, talking on the phone when other people were around made him feel uncomfortable.
Sensing his presence the boy turned around, eyed him from top to toe with one eyebrow raised. He chuckled silently to himself before turning around again, not even bothering to bow and greet him. Jonghyun raised both his eyebrows in surprise. They had never seen each other before, so why the attitude?
“Do you work here?” Jonghyun asked, immediately wanting to make his dad fire him if the answer would be yes. Really, what kind of a person acts like that?
Jonghyun knew everyone working here except from this guy and he realized too late his question sounded more like an accuse, rather than just a simple question. But then he saw that look on the other one's face again and Jonghyun didn't feel bad any more for not using a nice tone when speaking to him. The brunet was glaring daggers at him and it didn't take long before Jonghyun started to feel uneasy.
“No, I'm spending my holiday here in this building.” the young man sarcastically snapped back, obviously being offended, and obviously holding a personal grudge against Jonghyun.
That's it. Did this guy even know who he was talking to? Who the heck did he think he was? Jonghyun was going to make sure this rude bitch wouldn't get to keep his job.
“Who are you?” Jonghyun asked, so he had a name to remember when he went to his dad's office.
“The idiot.” the other replied, hands on his narrow hips.
Oh. The glare and rude tone and overall hatred towards Jonghyun suddenly made sense. Jonghyun's face got red of embarrassment and he hoped from the bottom of his heart that the other wouldn't notice. Oops.
“Oh...” he replied dumbly, his own cockiness immediately disappearing within a second. “I'm... sorry about that.”
The tall male rolled his eyes before turning around, muttering a low “never mind”. After a few seconds he walked over to the small round table in the centre of the room with a cup of tea in his right hand. He sat down and started stirring his tea as he opened his mouth to speak:
“At least you helped me pick up everything I dropped after you pushed me.” He was breathing hard through his nostrils in pure anger. This guy clearly loved rubbing salt into the wounds.
Jonghyun cleared his throat. The unknown guy was extremely unpleasant, but Jonghyun couldn't deny he deserved a proper apology. “I was in a hurry.” he tried to explain. “I'm really sorry”.
“Whatever.” the other replied, and for a split second Jonghyun didn't regret calling him an idiot. But only for a split second.
“People usually say 'thanks' after an honest apology.” he remarked as he walked over to the sink, where the guy had been standing before, to get what he came for. He opened the kitchen cupboard on the wall to take out a clean glass, turned on the tap and filled it with water. He leaned against the sink unit, his left hand holding his glass of water and his right hand supporting his body weight on the sink. While he was standing there looking at the stranger, he realized that the man's physique, his shoulders and waist and arms, made him look like a female from behind.
“You never told me your name.” he commented, this time sounding a million times nicer. He got no reply. Instead he silently watched the stranger gulp down his tea before getting up and walk towards him. The male almost threw his cup in the basin, tilted his head a little and smiled an obvious fake smile as he looked Jonghyun in the eyes. He was standing close, so close Jonghyun could feel his sweet perfume and newly washed hair.
“Nice talking to you too.” he said in pure sarcasm, before leaving the room.
Jonghyun couldn't help but grin when the other was out of sight. Wow, he thought, what a bitch.
* * *
His whole body hurt; his head, his neck, his legs - everything. Not because his job was physically strenuous - because it wasn't, he spend most of his time in his office reading the newspaper, playing on his computer, texting his friends - but because he was stressed. His morning had been a disaster and the meeting had been a pain. And the moment before he pressed the key into the keyhole to his apartment he realized he still hadn't apologized for being so rude this morning. This could only mean one thing; yelling and/or angry looks was expecting him on the other side of the door. Great.
But when he opened the front door the apartment was completely dark. He kicked his shoes off, not caring in which direction, before taking of his jacket. “I’m home.” he said in a loud voice as he made his way to the kitchen. He said it because it was a habit - that’s what happens when you live with someone for two years - since the dark, abandoned apartment already told him that he was alone. He usually enjoyed Jessica's company, she was a funny girl, but now he was more than thankful she wasn’t home.
He filled a big glass with water before drinking it all in one shot; chuckling to himself as he remembered this morning in the staff break room. He placed the wet glass in the empty basin sink and decided to take a quick shower before going straight to bed but as he made his way over to the bathroom he glanced to his right, looking out the glass door leading to his balcony. He stayed like that for a moment, admiring the beauty of the billion stars in the dark sky. He smiled, immediately feeling a little more relaxed as if he for at least a moment forgot he lived in a stressful city filled with problems and demanding parents and angry girlfriends. So instead of doing as planned he loosened his tie with one hand before walking over to open the balcony door, not caring to grab his jacket or shoes.
Living on the 9th floor had its advantages. The cars didn’t bother him and neither did most of the buildings in this area since this building was one of the taller ones. He sat down on a outdoors chair and sighed heavily; letting his head fall back as he tried to relax his body. He asked himself if maybe he was starting to get depressed. He was searching for something he didn't know, and he felt... nothing, really. His body was a shell following its daily routine. He had stopped enjoying his life a long time ago. Should he talk to someone? A psychologist maybe?
He chuckled soundlessly when the thought crossed him that he had never heard of anyone seeing a psychologist because they suffered from boredom.
After some time a part of him actually managed to relax. Even so, the little Jonghyun on his shoulder, scolding him loudly for wasting his time in the balcony, never left. That little Jonghyun was reminding him that he had things to do and papers to read and phone calls to make. It was sad how he couldn't give himself a break, not even in his home and with a heavy sigh he let that little bastard win.
He was about to force himself up from his half sitting-half lying position when he realized he wasn't alone. A way too familiar boy was standing in the neighbour balcony; one elbow on the edge of his balcony and his hand supporting his chin. It didn't take a second for Jonghyun to recognize him, no matter how surprised he was to see the other male there. Even little Jonghyun on his shoulder stopped nagging.
Compared to earlier today, the brunet was having a peaceful expression, and not that frown from before. He looked prettier like that.
“Hey there.” Jonghyun said, not really knowing why. The young man jumped in surprise - Jonghyun grinned a little, because to him it looked funny - and when he looked at Jonghyun he had a confused expression. That was until he recognized him and went back to what seemed to be his default expression; a frown.
“Hi.” he replied unenthusiastically, almost sounding like he was forced to say it, eyes back to the sky. Jonghyun could clearly hear that the other wasn't surprised in a good way.
“Do you live here?”
“My friend lives here. I'm just visiting.”
Jonghyun nodded slowly, as if the stranger had said something really interesting - it was an old habit he used back in the office. How weird, Jonghyun had been living here for years and didn't recall ever seeing this guy here before. Then again, he hadn't recognized the boy earlier today in the staff room. It was obvious Jonghyun's memory wasn't the best when it came to remembering faces.
“I'm Kim Jonghyun.”
The other looked at him again, this time without the frown and Jonghyun assumed it was because he hadn't expected an introduction. He was polite enough to reply. “Kim Kibum.” he said dryly.
Jonghyun smiled, all teeth, and eyes peering as he placed his hand on his heart and bowed - a corny gesture he knew always worked (at least with the ladies). He saw the corner of Kibum's mouth twitch as he tried to suppress a smile. Oh, so he was one of those. One of those who whenever they decided to get angry, they would stay angry no matter what.
Putting the pieces together, the pieces Jonghyun had managed to collect regarding Kibum's personality, he got the feeling that a simple 'I'm sorry' wouldn't be enough to change the first impression Kibum had of him. There was no point in have Kibum dislike him (and constantly give him these nasty looks) because of a bad morning Jonghyun happened to have that one day. Besides, Kibum was the only one in that entire building who was around his own age. Trying to get along with him wouldn't cost too much (not anything Jonghyun couldn't afford anyway). These thoughts made Jonghyun speak up:
“Would you like to go out sometime?”
Kibum's huge eyes made Jonghyun almost laugh out loud.
“Just eating.” Jonghyun assured, but that shocked and almost scared look still didn't leave Kibum's face. “As an apology.” he continued. “It wasn’t my intention being that rude earlier today and I just want to apologize properly.”
Kibum thought for a moment, as if he was thinking through a very important decision and Jonghyun didn't know why he was hesitating. He just asked him to go out and eat with him, not if he wanted to marry him.
“Sure.” Kibum finally said “Why not?”. He raised himself from his leaning position, pulled his light blue shirt a little to adjust it, and walked over to the balcony door. “You're paying.” he informed, because no it was not a suggestion, much less a question, before walking inside and closing the door behind him.
What a funny guy.
