crazed cats creaking
in the cold clean
shining night

and a quiet
half forged plea for
an early sunrise

just so we have time to see it
all we want to do is see it

a beaming businessman
striding
brilliant black of his sunglasses
protection from atmospheric cancer
"damn that early sunrise"

giggling adolescents
skipping school screaming
instead
about that south carolina
sunburn

what were we thinking
wishing for an early sunrise

what were we thinking
it would be alright

it would be alright
if only the cats could

correct the cracking of the hemisphere

if only the cats we have killed
could protect us from ourselves

our actions will kill us
if our own hands don't do it first.
