Note adjustment in title. I don't mean to imply that bombs and shells are always evil. Like swords, crossbows, greek fire, machine guns, poison gas, napalm, and nuclear weapons, they are designed to kill and destroy. And sometimes that's what you have to do to save those you care about from death or tyranny. But any weapon has side-effects, and costs.
Israeli airstrike accidentally hits residential building, many civilians killed context from the Jerusalem Post, admittedly a biased source Bad. Very bad. Bad things happen in war. Innocent noncombatants in the area get hurt, killed, or lose their homes and all they own. But maybe this phenomenon is made worse when a technically advanced military (like Israel's) relies on bombs and missiles rather than infantry.
The Israelis have more reason to do so than most. Heavily outnumbered by their enemies, they can't afford to lose 1:1, or even 10:1. Sending in drones and missiles saves Israeli soldiers' lives, at the cost of Lebanese civilians.
In a war that's not a desperate struggle for survival on the Israeli side, maybe that's not an honorable trade to make.
Ted Rall, who is often over-the-top, unbalanced, biased, and just plain nutty, makes the point
here.
It should be noted that Hezbollah has been regularly firing rockets at Israeli civilians. As with torture, we should keep some moral standards even when our foes do not.
