One hundred years ago we barely had internal-combustion engines. No solar cells, no nuclear reactors. The main pollution problems were coal smoke and horse droppings.
The changes we see in the next hundred years will likely be equally extreme. We should capitalize on that by promoting long-term research rather than drastic and expensive immediate solutions to solve long-term problems.
Sometimes the best way to build a pyramid is not to conscript a hundred thousand slaves to haul blocks, but to invent the bulldozer.
