Conversation with Kalina

"We had a birthday party for King Martin."

Who?

"King Martin Junior"

Oh! Martin Luther King Junior, that's cool. Can you tell me about him?

"He said that everybody should love each other."

I was listening to some of King's speeches, and I realized that Kalina has a good point. King's defense of civil rights, his push for integration, his nonviolent philosophy were all strongly linked to a sense of universal love.

Leviticus 19:18 ("Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself." and Leviticus 19:34 ("But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.").

(Also found in various forms in Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Wicca, Confucianism, secular philosophy, etc.)

Verse 34 is the really critical part. Loving people who look like you and act like you is easy. Loving those funny-looking guys down the block is, historically, a tougher sell. But King did it.
