I, too, have a lot of fondness for the special high school program I was in. It was a full four-year program (although I dropped out the last year for family reasons) focusing on Science, Engineering, and Technology. I think I got a higher quality of education, a more interesting education, and a higher quality of peers/friends. But it's this last point that was most crucial, I think, because the people I compared myself to were also advanced. We challenged each other and served as some kind of tacit educational encouragement.

My greatest fear about my son's education is that he won't have such an amazing peer group at that critical age.

Respect and kudos to you for offering your time to challenge and encourage some bright kids.
