Absolutely not. I happen to be a genius.

The town keeps people from escaping. It's not as easy as driving down the road and leaving.

Oh really? Is zhere some sort of force-field? Or is it just a very high fence?

[Medic is in a bad mood, and when he's in a bad mood, he gets snippy and sarcastic...er than usual.]

I suppose zhe only vhay out is to die, ja, or somezhing romantic like zhat?

A fence? I could deal with a fence.

The roads loop back on themselves. Go down one long enough and instead of leaving the town you end up back on the other side.

And based on what I've seen, death doesn't last here.

[Apparently Medic only heard that last bit. He now sounds intensely interested.]

Vhat do you mean, 'death doesn't last here'?

People have died here. They come back.

-- zhere is a respawn! I vhon't heff to abandon my -- no, no, I vhill record new data, in a new environment, vith new variables und new test subjects!

If only I still had my journals...

This happens in your world?

In my world we can bring people back from the brink with a life bottle, but the closest we can get to actually raising the dead has been through human replication.

Ja, zhis happens in my vhorld -- or at least, my place of vherk. All employees are connected to a respawn, und if vhe die, we reappear in a certain place after a certain amount of time, good as new.

[To put it simply, anyway.]

...That's fascinating. How does it work?

I heff been trying to crack it ever since I vhas first hired. My employers are extremely loath to tell us any more zhan vhe need to know, so I have found out very little. Zhe most I can confirm is zhat it is all vhone machine, und zhat damage carries over sporadically -- a scar you earned vhen you vhere injured but did not die -- vhereas if you die before zhe vhound can set, it is erased completely. Zhis makes it clear zhat zhe respawn is updated at some rate to keep zhe new copies 'up to date', but I haven't yet been able to determine vhat zhat rate is.

[He's extremely displeased by his limited knowledge, and it shows in his tone of voice.]

That sounds amazing; the implications of that technology are huge.

I was speaking to someone the other day about perhaps finding out if people in Mayfield can actually breed and bring a child to term. I think it would be worth finding out, if I can find subjects.

Now zhat is an interesting idea. Vhould zhe droning process heff any effect on zhe child? Vhould respawning terminate zhe pregnancy, or restart it?

[SCIENCE OH GOD HE LOVES IT SO MUCH.]

Zhis must be tested. Should vhe try different combinations of 'drones' und 'real' people, to see if zhat makes a difference?

[He'll totally knock up his drone wife in the name of science. Just sayin'.]

Every variable should be tested, although trying to get drones to mate could prove tricky. Perhaps we could drug them with something?

I'm Dist, by the way.
