O my, despite having had excellent care the past 9 months and living 10 mins walking at slow, pregnant, pace from a good hospital, i am a bit worried about the actual birth and its aftermath. If all goes well, we will be tossed out on the street 2 hours after. Statistically it is likely this will be in the middle of the night

Sorry to hear that things aren't well over there. In the UK mothers usually get allowed in overnight, in fact there are many medical reasons why they will ask you to stay. In many hospitals dads can't stay the night at all although this is changing too, driven by campaigns by organisations like the National Childcare Trust (NCT).
There are many midwives I've heard of in the UK who push home birth too, Emma said that all of her midwives suggested home birth but we wanted (if possible) a water birth and didn't want to bother with all the mess of doing it at home.
Do you have Birthing Centres? In the UK we have a number of smaller community hospitals that are often much quieter than the main hospitals and they might let you stay in longer.
Without trying to sound too blase about it, I'd try not to worry. If nothing unusual has shown up so far you'll almost certainly be fine - after all, women have been doing this just fine on their own for millennia ;-)
