Ryeowook was sick. Sick enough that his schedule was cancelled. Sick enough that the other boys got together with their schedules and figured out who would be able to take care of him when so that he wouldn’t have to be home alone.
Eeteuk came in first thing in the morning with some hot cereal for breakfast. Ryeowook was bundled up in the bed, looking miserable.
“How are you feeling, magnae?” Ryeowook tried to smile reassuringly, but coughed instead. “I’m okay…”
“Here,” Eeteuk said, sitting gently on the bed, “Try to eat this so that you don't have to take your medicine on an empty stomach.” Ryeowook struggled to sit up and Eeteuk helped by propping some pillows up behind him. Ryeowook struggled to eat, but after a few hesitant bites, he pushed it away. “I can’t, hyung.”
Eeteuk frowned. “I should take your temperature.” He did. It was really high. Eeteuk was worried.
“Hyung, don’t worry, I’ll be okay, I just need to get some sleep…”
Eeteuk nodded. “Take your medicine first. I’ll call everyone and make sure that they know to let you sleep.”
A little while later, the door opened and someone pushed Heechul inside. He hesitantly approached the bed. “You look awful, you aren’t contagious, are you?”
Ryeowook couldn’t help but laugh a little, even though it made his throat hurt. “I don’t think so, Hyung.” Heechul slowly edged towards the bed and sat down. “Okay.”
He started telling Ryeowook some elaborate story about how he’d been chased by crazed fans that morning. Ryeowook tried to listen, but he fell back asleep.
When he woke again, it was because Kyuhyun was staring at him.
“Kyu~” he whispered, struggling to sit up, “Are you okay?” Kyuhyun got up and pushed him back down. “Don’t try to get up, Ryeowookie, you should be resting.”
Ryeowook nodded and sank back down into the bed.
“I'm just worried about you is all,” Kyuhyun said softly, pushing Ryeowook’s hair back off his sweaty forehead. “I don't know what I can do to make you feel better…” Ryeowook smiled. “You can sing to me...”
Kyuhyun lit up at the request and immediately started softly singing Ryeowook's favorite song. Ryeowook fell back to sleep, a smile on his face.
Someone was shaking him. “Ryeowook, you need to wake up and take some medicine.” He peeked out of one eye. It was Kangin. “Hyung, I'm awake,” Ryeowook mumbled. Kangin looked down at him. “I was worried, you took a long time to wake up.” Ryeowook frowned. “I'm sorry.”
“It's okay,” Kangin said, grinning. He gave him some medicine, and then sat down in a chair and began telling Ryeowook about what he had missed at practice. The medicine caused Ryeowook to fall quickly back asleep.
He was later awoken by Shindong. "Hey, Ryeowook," he said, “Eeteuk just called and said I should wake you up and see if you can eat some lunch. I made ramen..."
Ryeowook took one look at the ramen and ran for the bathroom, sick.
Next time he woke up it was because loud arguing was coming from the hallway.
"I want to do it."
"No, I do."
"But Eeteuk called me, and-"
“Shh, you're too loud!”
The door swung open and Eunhyuk and Donghae came running into the room. "Ryeowook-ah, I've come to give you your medicine!" Eunhyuk announced, grabbing for the bottle.
Donghae glared at Eunhyuk. "Well, I'm going to take your temperature!"
“He doesn’t need his temperature taken for another 23 minutes!”
"Well then I'm going to fluff his pillows!"
Ryeowook sat back and let them do their worst.
Something was moving around on his bed. Ryeowook opened his eyes and looked over to the side of his bed. There was a giant pink teddy bear.
“Do you like it?” Sungmin asked, jumping on the bed and hugging it excitedly. “I got it for you. To make you feel better!!!” Ryeowook nodded. “It’s nice, Minnie.”
“Sungmin, don't sit on him, he's sick,” Kibum said, pulling Sungmin off the bed.
“How are you feeling, Ryeowooksshi?” Kibum asked.
“A little better I think,” Ryeowook replied.
“I need to take your temperature.”
“Again?”
Kibum smiled sympathetically. “Eeteuk-umma said we have to every hour and write it on this chart.”
“And if we don’t he’s going to send Kangin after us!” Sungmin added with wide eyes.
Ryeowook giggled. Kibum took his temperature. It was still really high.
Sungmin frowned. “I'll go get some of my stuffed animals for you! This one isn't helping enough.” Kibum sighed and turned to chase after Sungmin. "Sungmin-hyung, he's sick, you don't need to fill his room with toys." Ryeowook was still smiling when he fell back asleep.
Hankyung came in, followed by Siwon. "I made you some dinner, Ryeowook-ah..." he said in soft stilted Korean, "It's soup, but I'll make you beijing fried rice when you feel better." Hankyung and Siwon took turns feeding Ryeowook, who tried to fight it the whole time. "I can eat myself, I’m really feeling much better."
"Don't worry about it," Siwon said, flashing a dimpled grin at Ryeowook. "We like taking care of you."
Later that night, Ryeowook felt the bed sink. He didn't even have to open his eyes, he knew who it was. The only one who hadn't been to see him was Yehsung. He felt a kiss on his forehead and smiled.
Yehsung chuckled, "So you're awake, hmm?"
Ryeowook nodded, slowly opening his eyes.
“How are you feeling?” Yehsung asked, putting his hand on his forehead. “I think you're temperature's gone.”
Ryeowook smiled, “I feel a lot better actually.”
“Good. Did everyone take good care of you?”
“Yes. Too good, really.”
Yehsung laughed and crawled under the covers. “Well it's my turn now.”
“Finally...” Ryeowook whispered, “I missed you.”
Yehsung nuzzled Ryeowook's neck and wrapped his arms around his lover.
As he drifted to sleep, Ryeowook couldn't help but think of how lucky he was, with his special family to take care of him.
