I like Nathan's design (especially considering I hold some responsibility for it), and knowing the character (especially considering I bear a great deal of responsibility for it), he appeals to me.
I suppose you can't have everything appeal to everyone though. JRPGs as an entire genre have done very little to speak to me in years. Nor has indie rock, mainstream rock, movies like Juno, etc. I guess it is all a matter of personal taste.
One of the things I often ponder is quality prior to sale versus quality after sale.
For me, these questions are ultimately about evaluating product quality prior to sale. Aesthetic judgments are exactly what is implied by the term, and as such it is a bit premature to divine what the character represents at this point. However, as BC is an action game, I think the aesthetic design of the character triggers the sort of mental imagery of the experience to come. Hence, in my mind, he is contributing to the quality of the product prior to sale.
