Another one bites the dust...

I've been waiting for the axe to fall at work for the last month, so when the office manager called everyone into the breakroom today to discuss the next round of "released" employees, I wasn't all that surprised. When my department manager called me and Connie (the Field Ops Office Supervisor) into one of the rooms to let us know that I'd be leaving, pretty much everyone but me was holding back tears.

That really meant a lot, too. I've grown to love the people in this office as friends, and after spending the last five months working in such close quarters, we've gotten to know quite a few personal details about one another. And I honestly, genuinely like everyone there, even those I haven't had the chance to grow particularly close to- like the Administrative Manager, who gave me a hug on his way out this afternoon and told me, "We love ya, kid. Don't worry, you'll be back."

And I have no doubt that I will. The next operation begins about mid-to-late August, and they'll be re-hiring the experienced clerks for the next go 'round; there's just not enough money in the budget for the office to keep paying people for doing literally nothing over the next month. That's the nature of temporary government employment, anyway- they use you when they need you and let you go when they don't, simple as that. That's why we're only hired on for two months at a time...I just happened to get a couple of extensions. ^_~

And anyway, Eric (my manager) already said that the only thing keeping me from being re-hired would be my finding another job in the interim, which may or may not happen depending on how much effort I want to put into looking. I've been pretty lazy so far. ^^ But I'd been anticipating this kind of break in employment since I was originally hired, so I'm definitely looking forward to having a nice six weeks or so worth of time off. Looks like I haven't outgrown summer vacation after all, woohoo!

My last day is July 3. The office was supposed to be closed in observance of Independence Day, but with all the people about to be released indefinitely, the managers decided to open things up to give everyone a chance to earn one more day's pay. Pretty classy of them, I'd say. Just one more reason while I like working there, and why I look forward to going back, when and if they call.

I still hate answering phones, though. >>
