[Inside of a particular room in the White Chalice, a makeshift film cinema's been set up and displaying a certain horror movie on a blank wall.  Josh is helping himself to quite a bit of popcorn too, munching on it happily whenever he's not quoting lines with the movie.  Bother, join in, etc.?  All up to you!]

Hey, that looks vintage! I didn't know you were into old horror movies.

[Helps himself some popcorn]

[That's no problem. That's why it's there, after all.]

Yeah, it's pretty old. Way back in the old calender no less.

[Josh smirked a little as he watched the infamous "monster dog" scene start and took some time out of quoting lines to talk with Lowe.]

It was a tradition back then that every year, before the long winter blackout the poor souls stuck in Antarctica would all watch this just to get instilled with a sense of paranoia.

Good flick, though.

Special effects are good for its age.
But don't tell me you ever got monsters like that on the base!

Nah, nothing like that.

And even if we did, there were all sorts of machines I'd test out from time to time. Any one of those could have blown a monster away.

I'd just use a flamethrower.

[And guess which scene is shown as he says that]
Heh, talk about good timing. Smart people - but I didn't know heads could do that.

MacReady put it best. The thing's different from us. That's its excuse for all the shit it does.

If I ever see aliens one day, they'd better be playing nicer than this. I don't mind different.

Well, my only experience was with Invaders.

... And honestly those things are about as freaky. And a hell of a lot harder to kill if your machine doesn't have a Getter Reactor.

Oh yeah, these guys. I didn't run into them yet, and from what I know I'm kinda glad I didn't.

So I guess the movie's closer to reality for you than for most people. And I'm not talking about the setting.

Unfortunately. But then again, the idea of shapeshifters have been around for thousands of years. It was only a matter of time before humanity ran into some species of them.

We're just lucky they waited this long. A few hundred years earlier, and we'd probably be lacking the means to combat them effectively.

Maybe they deliberately appeared only now? Like they're after our high-level tech or something...

Yeah, whatever. You're right, let's just be happy we can fight 'em.

And more important than that...

[Josh turned his attention back to the movie]

That we don't have to fight them right i now.

Right! So let's cheer on the guys in the movie and give them a fighting chance.

Wait... how many of them survive this again?

Technically none. Childs and MacReady are left to die from exposure at the end and it's unlikely anyone will pick them up.

And that's if both of them were human. Debates have been raging over whether Childs is a human or not at the end ever since this movie came out.

Okay... it's a horror movie after all. But I'd rather our alien invasion story got a happier ending.

Pretty sure we all do.
