Sahasrara, the Crown Chakra
9: Set a long term goal. Make a plan for accomplishing that goal and post that plan where you will see it when you wake up. From now on, whenever you see that plan, do something to get closer to that goal.

Aaron stared at the calendar that he'd hung opposite his bed with barely-awake eyes. Each Saturday was outlined in a different colour. Jack's doing. The idea had been to spend more time together. He hadn't known that it would end up being such a regular thing, and that it'd mean losing one of the few mornings he could usually count on sleeping late. He wasn't getting any younger and sleep was already a precious commodity. But, he reminded himself, he had been feeling better - much better, actually - since making himself take time with his son. It had been too easy to pawn everything off on Jessica, and he shouldn't have been doing that to begin with.

In the interest of fairness, however, he had to admit it was a process. He'd not had much time to learn to be a father before he was suddenly on his own. His own fault, but even now, he was stumbling through. More than that, it was good to see Jack so happy with him, to see him smiling and hear him laugh, even if it was balanced by a terror that Jack wouldn't really remember his mother.

He couldn't let himself worry about those things, though. Not now, not when everything seemed to be going better. The dark seemed to be receding, and he hadn't lamented his inability to sneak a drink in weeks. Instead, he lamented a bit of his lack of sleep, but even that was more joke than truth. He could kick the world-weariness yet. All it took was a determination to keep himself from obsessing and a willingness to enjoy what was ahead of him.

Even if he did sometimes hear Morgan complain good-naturedly about the amount of paperwork he was doing now. Aaron chuckled to himself as he finally started to climb out of his good, comfortable bed. He never should've gotten them used to him doing all of that paperwork. Yes, he needed their heads in the job, but right now, he was learning another part of his long, not exactly simple lesson. Now, while he could, was the time to put himself and his family first. And the calendar with its Saturdays outlined in bright crayon colours was a constant reminder.

He picked up the marker that hung beside it on its little ball chain and drew an X through the uppermost square before picking up his bathrobe and heading down the hall, stifling a yawn. It wouldn't do to yawn now. Pushing Jack's door open, smiling widely, he called, "C'mon, buddy, it's time to get up. I'm making pancakes."
