rant

I just need to vent for a minute, okay? No need to read this unless you want an excuse to throw something at my head. :p

My goal is to have the kitchen in usable condition by early evening, so I can make dinner. Which also means going to the store, because, gifted as I am, I cannot make dinner from blueberries, nectarines, butter, eggs, bread, peanut butter, jam, cereal, milk, ice cream bars, iced tea, cranberry juice, and butterscotch candy. Though that would be interesting. I do have all of my herbs and spices somewhere, but when your mother-in-law packs up your kitchen and labels every single box, "Kitchen," well, good freaking luck.

I have also discovered that about half of the shelves in our house, including the ones in the kitchen closet ("pantry" on the floor plan) and pretty much all of those above my head, seem to be covered in something gritty that looks like sand. Well, it looks like sugar, but it doesn't melt. So I set a box on the shelf in our closet and this POOF of grit flies everywhere. Yuck.

Did I mention the liquid laundry detergent the former tenants (three college-age boys, it turns out) spilled on the shelf above the washer (which is also above my head) and left to solidify? It took nearly an entire roll of paper towels + warm water to clean that up. Did no one clean this place before we moved in? I swear on all that is holy, next time we move, I'm having someone come clean the place before we move in. I'm sick of dealing with other people's dirt.

Bear started work today. He had to be there at 7 a.m. and didn't expect to be done before 4 p.m. He rode the bus, because, like most big cities, Charlotte doesn't seem to have much/any parking Uptown. While I'm out getting groceries, I'm supposed to see if I can find a place to buy him a 10-ride express pass for the bus. Then if it works well, we'll buy him a month-long pass.

He didn't sleep at all last night. Even jumped out of bed randomly at 3:50 a.m. to check the time--which is good, I guess, because that's when he discovered he hadn't set the alarm. :p

On a happier note, Cathy (former boss) called me yesterday so I could talk to the kids. Apparently while she was at the grocery picking out some Lunchables for Spencer, Natalie said, "Buy one me! Buy one Miss Miya!" Cathy had to explain that I'm in North Carolina now and won't be eating lunch with Nat, but that she could talk to me on the phone. Apparently Nat, who loves everyone, loves the new nanny; Julia is the easiest baby in the world and doesn't mind mommy having gone back to work; and Spencer is slowly warming up to Vicki.
